Norman Joel Lewis passed away peacefully on October 29, 2025, in Rancho Mirage, California, having recently celebrated his remarkable 98th birthday. Born in 1927 in the Bronx, New York, with roots proudly anchored there, he grew up in a close-knit community that shaped his lifelong values of family, loyalty, resilience and friendship. He carried those values with him through every chapter of his life — as a devoted husband, a loving father, a proud grandfather. Norman was predeceased by his beloved wife of over 50 years, Loretta Varon Lewis, with whom he shared many wonderful years filled with laughter, adventure, enduring love and traveling the world. He was later introduced to Myra Gordon, whose kindness, love, and affection brought him comfort and happiness for over 15 years.
He is survived by his three sons — Jeffrey (Kaye), Peter (Wendy), and Kenneth (Lori) who were blessed to have his steady guidance and example. His nine grandchildren, Theodore, Alexander, Julia, Amelia, Daniel (Alexandra), Andrew, Eliza, Nathaniel, and Teddy and his three great-grandchildren, Otis, Archer, and Henrietta. They will always remember their “Poppy” for his warmth, wisdom, generosity, and the special sparkle in his eye whenever family gathered near.
Norman was a pioneer in the Toy Industry, co-founding LJN Toys (his initials backwards), He was one of the early adapters in the toy industry to use TV, movie and personality licensing, such as Rookies, SWAT, Emergency, Betsy Clark, Disney, Gumby and many others.
A superior athlete, Norman’s great passion was golf where he played as a single digit handicap for most of his life. With a love for travel, he earned the friendship and respect of so many people worldwide.
The numerous lives that he touched are remarkable. Always available for sound advice and compassion, his most endearing trait was giving without ever seeking anything in return. This is what defined his life and why so many called him their “father”, “cherished brother”, or “dear friend” in the truest sense. Norman’s life was defined not only by integrity, but by generosity of spirit. He had a sharp mind, a gentle wit, and an unshakable sense of optimism. Whether sharing a story from his Bronx childhood, offering advice drawn from hard-earned experience, or simply sitting quietly with a loved one, those around him felt valued and loved. A private family gathering will be held to celebrate Norman’s life and legacy.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in Norman’s memory may be made to the Loretta Varon Lewis Award in Voice at Juilliard.
