He was born in Hong Kong on July 8, 1928, to parents James O’ Chew and Siu-Laan Ma. He was the 6th of 8 children, named Waiman, Kitman, Chungman, Hinman, Yinman, Ngaiman (Norman), Sauman and Kinman (Kenneth).
Norman’s career spanned 40 years in the aeronautical engineering field. While he pioneered many principles and applications in the field of Fracture Mechanics, and won many awards during his employment at Aerospace Corporation, he is particularly proud of breaking the glass ceiling for Asian Americans in technical management positions.
He provided financial support to a large number of charitable, veterans and animal organizations. He and his wife, Pat, who preceded him in death, were regular attenders of Bel Air Presbyterian Church since 1980. Later, when his physical condition prevented him from attending, he enjoyed watching pastors David Jeremiah and Charles Stanley on television Sunday mornings.
Norman is a firm believer in God the Father Almighty and in Jesus Christ his only begotten Son. He believed that the Bible is the inspired word of God and that God so love the world that He gave His only Son so that anyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have everlasting life.
He is survived by his two brothers, Sauman and Kinman, and his son Phillip, a retired cardiologist residing in Liberty Lake, Washington, with his wife Jean, and son Clarence, a retired dentist residing in Bakersfield, California, with his wife, Thelma.
