In Loving Memory of Nathaniel “Nate” Glover
February 18, 1939 – September 30, 2025
It was an unusually warm day on February 18, 1939, when Nathalie Glover gave birth to her first child in Chicago, Illinois. She and her husband, Nathaniel Glover Sr., were grateful for the mild weather as they made their way to the hospital. Their son, Nathaniel Jr. —affectionately known as “Junior”— would later become big brother to twin sisters, Marcia and Carlotta.
Nate’s early years were spent in Chicago before the family relocated to the Village of Maywood. A strong work ethic was instilled in him from a young age; he began his first paper route at just eight years old. He continued working part-time throughout high school at Proviso High and later while attending Michigan State University and Roosevelt University in Chicago.
The record-setting blizzard of 1967, which dumped 23 inches of snow on Chicago, prompted Nate to seek a warmer climate in Southern California—a move that would shape the rest of his life.
Once settled, Nate began his over 40-year career in the title insurance industry with Transamerica Title. He later joined Southern Counties Title as an Advisory Title Officer and managed their Orange County operations. In 1981, he was recruited by Ticor Title as their lead Commercial Title Officer, a role he continued through the company’s merger with Chicago Title in 1991.
Nate was tailor-made for the title insurance industry, earning a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable and respected commercial title officers/underwriters in the state. Though he officially retired in 2004, his expertise was so valued that he continued working on a contract basis for another four years.
A pivotal business meeting in 1989 marked a major turning point in Nate’s personal life. It was there that he met Tina Daugherty, a colleague who would later become his closest friend and, ultimately, his wife. Nate and Tina were married for 30 years, sharing not only a profession but a deep love for travel. Together, they explored over 40 countries and numerous U.S. states, checking off bucket list destinations each year. Nate’s proudest travel milestone was visiting all seven continents, completed with their trip to Australia in 2023.
Retirement was a new adventure for Nate. He returned to golf with renewed enthusiasm, often teeing off with his longtime friend Melvin Earle—rounds that frequently ended at the bar. One of his most memorable moments on the course came when he and Melvin were paired with none other than Smokey Robinson and his guest, whom they affectionately came to know as “Smoke.”
Inspired by a kayaking trip in Alaska, Nate took up the sport locally at Mother's Beach in Long Beach, finding peace and tranquility on the water. This led to a desire to learn sailing, and eventually, flying. He took weekly lessons in San Diego, pursuing his passion for flight until health challenges grounded him.
Nate was a true jazz aficionado. He lived and breathed the music, even learning to play his favorite instrument, the saxophone. Though he never mastered it, he had a great time trying. He and Tina sought out jazz clubs wherever they traveled, believing music to be the universal language. Nate was a lifelong supporter of KJazz and volunteered at their annual fundraising drives.
A quiet intellectual, Nate was known for being a better listener than talker. He loved Crossword and Sudoku puzzles and was an avid reader. His passions also included football—first as a devoted Bears fan, later converted to a Chiefs fan by his father-in-law, Bennie Daugherty.
Despite his many interests, Nate’s greatest love was for his family and friends. In addition to his three daughters, he became the favorite Uncle/Tio aka “Uncle Ice Tea” and “Brother Nate” to a wide circle of nieces, nephews, and extended family. He had a gift for making everyone feel special, as if they shared a unique bond with him – and often did.
Nate will be remembered for his quick wit, dry humor, deep laugh, and that signature wry smile when he was in on the joke. He loved cruising down PCH in his ragtop, exploring new restaurants, and staying loyal to his favorite spots. A die-hard politico, he spent hours watching news and commentary, always engaged in the world around him.
Nate was a fighter, surviving numerous health challenges over the past decade. His final and toughest battle came after a debilitating stroke in September 2024. He passed peacefully on September 30, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love, laughter, and countless photo albums filled with memories.
He was preceded in death by his father, Nathaniel Glover Sr.; mother, Nathalie Glover; sister, Carlotta Daugherty; and dear friend Jerry “Brother” Lyles.
Nate is survived by his devoted and loving wife, Tina Glover; his beloved daughters Monique Tinsley of Chicago, IL, Shannon Falgoust (Phillip) of Sacramento, CA, and Carleigh Glover of Las Vegas, NV; his cherished sister Marcia Johnson of Chicago, IL; his lifelong friend, John Quinton (Joanna) of Mansfield, Texas; and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends who adored him.
Nate was a great man—a man’s man—funny, kind, brave, generous, caring, and full of heart. His memory will continue to shine brightly in the lives of all who were blessed to know and love him.
