Nancy Hung Fun Wong was born on October 17, 1925 in San Francisco to her mother, Lee Duk Yook and Lum Bow Sung. She was the 5th of 6 daughters in a family that included Rose, Emily, May, Frances and Elaine. Following the Great Depression, her parents moved the family to Chungsan, China. There, they lived in the town of Sakkee.
In the summer of 1939, at age 13, Nancy and her family fled to Macau because Japan had invaded China. Macau was an awful place to be, leading to a cramped living situation and a lack of food. In 1941, after 2 years of barely surviving in Macau, someone told them about American Red Cross aid. Red Cross aid packages fed the entire family. In gratitude to the American Red Cross, the family hopes you will donate to this organization in her memory.
The war with Japan ended in August 1945, and the family moved back to Chungsan. In 1947, Nancy and Frances moved to Los Angeles to live with Auntie Rose, Bunny, and Doug.
As fate would have it, Nancy's oldest sister Rose used to frequent the poultry shop where Frank worked. Ever social, Rose invited Nancy's future husband and his friends to dinner at her home. It was that evening when Nancy and Frank first met. Frank would borrow new cars to impress Nancy on dates. They married in June of 1951. They were blessed with the birth of their first child, Colleen, in 1953. That same year, Loubella Clothing opened, and Nancy, Frances, and Rose sewed clothes as a single needle operators.
Nancy and Frank worked hard together, eventually saving enough money to buy their first home in Los Feliz. Nancy's mother Lum Duk Yuk came to live with her in 1958. Frank and Nancy's son Jim was born in 1961. While Frank was working for Warner Foods, Auntie Nancy continued sewing at Loubella with Frances and Rose.
In the 1970s, sisters Nancy, Frances, and Rose started Lum's Fashions near Chinatown. They did contract manufacturing for the different clothing companies, but worked primarily with Mr. Levy at Loubella. The success of their business enabled Nancy and Frank to buy their home in Silverlake in 1975. In a very difficult moment for all, Colleen passed away in 1989.
In 1990, Nancy retired at 66 from Lum's Fashions to travel and enjoy life. Frank passed away in 1998. Losing her life partner after losing Colleen hit Nancy very hard.
Jim and Felicia were married in 1998, and they were blessed with the birth of their daughter in 1999 and their son in 2000. Having grandchildren made Nancy very happy. She loved her trips to the Bay Area to see them.
As time went on, her back and shoulder pain grew worse and curtailed her activity. Nancy passed away quietly in her sleep on Sunday, July 19th at age 94. Private ceremonies were held with close family.
In lieu of Flowers we would like for you to donate to the American Red Cross - In Memory of Nancy W. Lee https://www.redcross.org/donate/donation.html/ The Red Cross helped Nancy and her family out during the war time in Macau. We could almost say they saved our families lives by providing food and money to them until they were able to return back to the USA.
