Plaistow, NH: Myron A. Sorenson, 89, of Plaistow, NH, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at the Florida Hospital Deland, Deland, FL.
Born in Miami, FL, he was raised in the Dorchester section of Boston and attended school there and in New York City and served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.
He enlisted in the U.S. Merchant Marine and served during World War II and was a recipient of the World War II Victory Medal, the Merchant Marine Combat Bar, the Mediterranean Middle East War Zone Bar, the Atlantic War Zone Bar, the Pacific War Zone Bar, the New York State Veterans Medal, and the Mariners Medal for injuries received during wartime. He also attended officer school at Fort Trumbull, CT. Following the end of the War, he attended and graduated from Massachusetts Maritime Academy and was commissioned a Lieutenant, JG, and served for ten more years at sea as a First Engineer in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
After his discharge, he was employed as a Mechanical Designer at Artisan Industries of Waltham, MA until 1969 when he opened Sorenson's Ice Cream Parlor in Plaistow, NH. He remained active in the operation of the business until his retirement in 1980.
A long time winter resident of Deland, FL, Mr. Sorenson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Plaistow, NH, the Merchant Marine Veterans of World War II, the Merchant Marine Association, the Carl Davis Post Number 34 of the American Legion, Plaistow, NH, the Disabled American Veterans, the Plaistow Historical Society, and the AARP.
He enjoyed restoring antique cars, especially his Model-T Ford, hunting, traveling, working in and around his home, storytelling, and attending concerts on the Plaistow town green.
He was the husband of the late Mary (Comeau) Sorenson, and was also predeceased by his daughter, Linda Currier and his grandson Michael Kirlis. He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Roberta and Chris Kirlis of Plaistow, NH; three grandchildren, Nicholas Kirlis, Kristina Pomon, and Andrew Currier; and seven great-grandchildren. He is also survived by three sisters, Lucile Lindsey of East Kingston, NH, Dee Killian and Lannie Lois both of the South Shore, MA; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Bresnahan of Deland, FL and Gladys Kabon of Haverhill, MA; his longtime loving companion, Irene Casey of Deland, FL, and several nieces and nephews.
Relatives and friends may call on Thursday, December 27, 2012, from 4 to 8 PM at Brookside Chapel and Funeral Home, 116 Main Street, Route 121A, Plaistow Village. His funeral will be held on Friday, December 28, 2012, at 12:30 PM at the funeral home followed by burial with military honors in Plaistow Cemetery, Plaistow, NH.
