Monica Watts

December 14, 1962 — August 3, 2024

Monica Vernette Watts, a beacon of determination and a fierce advocate for those in need, passed away peacefully on August 3, 2024, at the age of 61. Born on December 14, 1962, Monica's life was a testament to her unwavering dedication to justice and equality, particularly for individuals with autism, disabled children, and underrepresented communities.

Monica's academic journey led her first to UC Riverside where she received her B.A in biology, and ultimately UCLA Medical School where she earned her Doctor of Medicine. Her commitment to her community was profound and unwavering, spanning over three decades. She tirelessly championed the rights of individuals with autism, ensuring they received the support and recognition they deserved, locally and around the globe. True to her commitment to activism and advocacy, as well as being a firm believer that education is a lifelong journey, Monica went back to UCLA later in life to earn a Patient Advocacy Certificate.

Monica was a beloved daughter to Eunice Watts and the late Grady Watts. She was a devoted mother to her two sons, Justin Hurtado and Julian Hurtado, who were the lights of her life. Her siblings, Rhonda Watts, Tina Ward, and Michelle Pollard, along with her late brothers, Marlon Lake, and Grady Watts Jr., cherished her vibrant spirit and unyielding love.

Her tireless spirit was evident in her volunteer work for the Obama campaign and her role as an ambassador for Autism Speaks. Monica's influence extended to various local campaigns for school board and city council members throughout Pasadena and Altadena, where she was a respected and formidable presence.

Monica was known for her sharp tongue, quick wit, and brilliant mind, qualities that left a lasting impression on anyone who encountered her. Whether facing a million-dollar attorney, an elected official, or an average person, Monica's intellect and passion were unmatched.

She was a regular at school board meetings, advocating tirelessly for equitable education for disabled children and supporting parents in navigating the educational system. A cherished member of the First Baptist Church of Pasadena, Monica's faith was a cornerstone of her life.

Her humor and brilliance were legendary, and many believed she could have excelled as a lawyer had she chosen that path. Monica Vernette Watts leaves behind a legacy of love, advocacy, and unwavering dedication to the betterment of her community.

Her memory will forever be cherished by her family, friends, and all those whose lives she touched. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Autism Speaks in her honor, continuing her life's mission of advocacy and support.
