Minnie C. Jackson

October 10, 1915 — January 17, 2012

Minnie C. (Babcock) Jackson, 96, of Plaistow, NH, formerly of Cambridge, MA died at Fox Den Retirement Community, Sandown, NH on Tuesday, January 17, 2012.

Minnie was born on October 10, 1915 in Bay Roberts, Newfoundland to Bertha and James Babcock. She was christened in the Salvation Army, and became a life long active member.

At age 14 her family moved to Bangor, ME; at age 18, the family moved to Cambridge, MA where she lived for over 50 years; and at age 72, she moved to Plaistow, NH to be closer to her family.

During Minnie's life-long service to the Salvation Army, she earned many awards; including one for 75 years of service in the Cambridge Salvation Army and one for Massachusetts Divisional Soldiers Recognition Certificate for faithfully and compassionately serving our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Her many awards praise her for outstanding service to the Cambridge Community which included visitations to hospitals and nursing homes. Minnie cooked for seniors in the Cambridge Corps for many years; and she was the head cook at Camp Wonderland for over 25 years. She was a familiar face during Red Kettle collections at Christmas time; and helped many young people attending college by offering her home to them while in school.

Of worthy mention, Minnie was a special mother to Mary Baldwin, and likewise Mary was a special daughter and long-time friend.  Also, special thanks to Steve Natola for his very caring help throughout Minnie's years in Plaistow.

Family members include daughter, Ruth Ortiz, and husband, Martin, of Nashua, NH; two sons Roy W. Jackson and wife, Judy, of Naples, FL; and Jim Jackson and wife, Ellen, of East Hampstead, NH.  She leaves five grandchildren: Roy A. Jackson of Plaistow, NH; Richard S. Jackson of Lowell, MA; John Hums of Plaistow, NH; Susan Caparco of Plaistow, NH; Rosanna Ortiz Sinel of Providence, RI; and four great grandchildren.  She was the last surviving sibling in a family of four sisters and two brothers. Minnie lost her beloved husband, Nelson Jackson, in 1975.

Relatives and friends may call on Monday, January 23, 2012 from 4:00 to 5:45 p.m. with a funeral service at 6:00 p.m., concluding with calling hours until 8:00 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main Street in Plaistow, N.H.  Burial will be held in Mount Auburn Cemetery in Cambridge, MA.

The family thanks the Fox Den Assisted Living Facility in Sandown, New Hampshire for their love and excellent care during her years there.

For gifts of kindness to her memory please send to The Salvation Army Building Fund, Box 390647, 402 Mass Avenue, Cambridge, MA 02139

A memorial service will be held at the Salvation Army in Cambridge, MA at a later date.
