Mildred Hart Tharp, 85, was born on November 25, 1931 in Louisville, Ky, the fourth child of the late Anna Louise (Thomas) of Jeffersontown, Ky and James Marion Hart of Louisville, Ky. She passed away on March 4, 2017 at her home in Cerritos, Ca.
Millie was a 1949 graduate of Girls High School in Louisville. She was a 1953 graduate of the University of Kentucky where she majored in medical technology. She was inducted into the honorary fraternity, Phi Beta Kappa.
After returning home to Louisville, she met Arvel Tharp in 1953 at Carlisle Ave Baptist Church, where they were married on August 25, 1956. Arvel was an ROTC student at the University of Louisville. He entered the Navy two weeks after they were married. After serving three years in the Navy, attending medical school in Indianapolis, IN, working an internship in Los Angeles, Ca, he entered the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) in 1964. In 1962, they worked three months in a mission hospital in Miraj, India.
They have two children, Kevin, born in 1961 in Indianapolis, and Gregory, born in 1964 in Washington, DC. They are living proof that she was the greatest as a mother.
Since they moved often, she worked in hospitals and laboratories in Lexington and Louisville, Ky; Norfolk and Fairfax Va; Indianapolis, In and Oakland and Los Angeles, Ca.
Because of frequent moves, she enjoyed exciting travel and exposure to other cultures. In 1981, she joined the CIA in the communications department and retired in 1990 when they moved to Cerritos, Ca.
She is survived by her loving husband of 61 years, Arvel. Also surviving sons, Kevin, of Cerritos, and Gregory (Mary) of Atlanta, Ga, as well as, granddaughters Emma and Claire. She is also survived by her brother James Hart of Louisville, two sisters, Juanita Pfaff of Camp Springs, Md and Dorothy Hart of Alexandria, Va; sister-in-law Geraldine Tharp of Dallas, Tx and numerous nieces and nephews.
Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Cypress, California.
