Michael John Sprague died on June 12, almost nine years after a five-year cancer diagnosis. Ironically, he was diagnosed on his 42nd birthday, and he died on what would have been his parents’ 65th wedding anniversary.
Michael was born and lived his whole life in Southern California. While still in high school, he began umpiring high school games, eventually moving up to college games and then the Minor Leagues. A back injury made it impossible to continue a professional career, but he kept on umpiring high school and JC games until his cancer diagnosis in 2016. He also spent 25 years working and teaching for H&R Block, training field reps and helping thousands of people file and amend their tax returns.
Michael dealt with four brain surgeries, multiple rehab sessions, and uncounted rounds of chemo and radiation until spring 2024, when his oncologist told him there were no more treatments available. Mike then proceeded to defy the odds one more time and live for fifteen more months in assisted living, playing chess, continuing his Spanish studies, and enjoying MythBusters, Doctor Who, and M*A*S*H reruns.
Michael is predeceased by his father John Sprague, his mother Luella Sprague, and his brother Robert Sprague. He is survived by his sister Sharon and brother-in-law Mike Sheffield, two nieces, a nephew, and six great-nieces and -nephews.
At his request there will be no formal memorial service. A party will be held towards the end of summer to allow friends to share stories, games, and some of his favorite foods.
