Michael Shields, 79, born on March 19, 1944, in Indianapolis, IN and passed away January 19, 2024. He resided in Hemet, CA at the time of his passing with his loving husband of over 50 years, Michael Murphy. Together, they led a wonderful life full of travel, family and laughter after meeting in 1973, making their way from Long Beach to Hemet and cruising around the world along the way. They made life long friends as they went, and always came home to their puppies - Brandi the most recent in a long line of dogs and was Michael’s baby; she was showered with love (and maybe some table scraps).

Michael will be remembered for everything he did for his family - Big Uncle Mike (and Little Uncle Mike) took an active role supporting the children, family, and friends in his life, from making sure the ice cream was well stocked to suiting up as Santa on Christmas to deliver presents. He encouraged us to take the right paths, lead a good life and make good choices (and save our money) - giving a lot of us our first jobs at one of his several businesses. He was there when life was easy, adding joy wherever he could, but more importantly, he showed up when it was hard, offering stability and protection to those of us that needed it the most.

Michael will be forever remembered and sorely missed by those nearest to him. He will live on in the memories and the impact he’s left on those who held him dear (especially when they’re eating ice cream).

Michael was preceded in death by his parents Norma Pickering and Howard Carter, his sisters Linda Schurter and Penny Soto.

Michael is survived by his husband Michael Murphy, stepson Robert Murphy and his husband Randy Lyons, brother Richard Pickering and his wife Nancy Ahern, brother Dennis Pickering, sister Raeona Nieuwdorp along with many nieces, nephews, family and friends.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Long Beach, CA.
