With great sadness, I share with you that my father, Michael Selsman, passed away on March 22, 2026. He had aphasia for years, and while the ability to speak slipped away, his desire to communicate and experience the joys of life and his family stayed with him. However, last September, what can only be described as a “dementia bomb” went off, and then multiple ailments ganged up on him.
He grew up in Queens, New York, and was moved to California by his employer, 20th Century Fox, in the early 1960s. He worked as a press agent, producer, writer, and literary agent, among other jobs in the film industry.
When he was a “cool kid” in a leather jacket in high school, he wasn’t enthusiastic about education, but throughout my life, he was a great reader and pursued knowledge of just about everything, mostly interested in the sciences. He learned how to cook healthy, Mediterranean-style, primarily vegetarian food and I learned almost everything I know about cooking from him. He always had classical music on in his immaculate apartment, where he lived for 51 years. I got to move in with him as an adult, when I relocated home to California from Boston and was switching careers, and we had so much fun together.
He was a great dad, and a terrific guide and advisor during difficult times. He treasured getting to be with Larry and me, and adored his grandchildren, Julianna and Jasper. He will be greatly missed.
-Alexandra Hughes
