Michael Arlen Guy

January 2, 1939 — January 5, 2013

Michael Arlen Guy, born January 2, 1939 in Denver, Colo. to Willard and Evelyn Guy, the youngest of four children, passed away peacefully on January 5, 2013, after a very short illness of cancer with his family at his bedside. At the age of 15, Michael and his father moved to San Leandro, Calif. where he pursued an interest in baseball. He was the recipient of a baseball scholarship to The College of the Sequoias. After graduation, he was hired as a Police Officer with the Los Angeles Police Department in 1960 and retired as a Police Sergeant in 1985. The majority of his time in the police department was spent in the Administrative Narcotics Division where he was instrumental in creating legislation related to narcotic enforcement, drug interdiction and treatment programs. His efforts included testimony before the California and United States Senate on drug related legislation. He always had a strong interest in training and education and as such was an instructor at the Los Angeles Police Academy and for 38-years served on the Board of Directors of the California Narcotic Officers Association. He is a lifetime member of the Organization. He was also an instructor for the DEA in local law enforcement agency drug training across the country. In 1985, Michael was awarded the "Alfred E. Stewart Memorial Award" by the Narcotic Officers Association as the Outstanding Narcotic Officer of the Year in California. More currently, he was the Regional Coordinator for the State of California Western States Information Network/RISS. For fifteen years he served with the Federal Probation and Parole Department testing and evaluating clients. Community and family involvement saw Michael coaching and managing his children's youth athletic programs in Pop Warner football and Little League. Between 1975 and 1986, he volunteered as the security manager for the PGA Los Angeles Open Golf Tournament and PGA Championship. He was also integrally involved with the security efforts for Coachella Valley golf events that included The Skins Games, the "Battle(s) at Bighorn" and the LPGA Samsung World Championship. Michael also served on the homeowners board of directors for Woodhaven Country Club as Past President. Michael is survived by his wife, Debby Wedell Guy; daughter, Kym; sons, Kevin (Carrie) and Keith (Dorrie) Guy; seven grandchildren; four great grandchildren; brother, Bill (Pat) Guy; brother-in-law, Robert (Phyllis) and sister-in-law Diane; ten nieces and nephews; and many, many loving friends. A memorial service will be held Saturday, January 12, 2013 at 10 am at the Ramon Chapel of Forest Lawn Cathedral City. A celebration of Michael's life will immediately follow. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested donations be made in Michael's memory to the California Narcotic Officers Association Survivors' Memorial Fund and/or the U.S.M.C. Wounded Warriors Project.
