Meththananda Kuruppu

Meththananda (Nanda) Kuruppu, born on February 27, 1943, in Matara, Sri Lanka, passed away on August 11, 2024, at home in Buena Park, California, surrounded by his immediate and extended family. He was a devoted father and husband, known for his kindness and generosity.

Meththananda's life was dedicated to caring for his family. He was a steadfast figure who ensured that his loved ones always felt supported and cherished. His commitment extended beyond his immediate family as he looked out for his siblings and their families and sponsored many of them to the United States from Sri Lanka, demonstrating his deep sense of responsibility and love.

Meththananda was also a devoted member of his Buddhist community. He played an instrumental role in helping build the local temple from its inception, and was always there to support in any way he could. Even as he faced the challenges of his illness, he remained devoted, attending services whenever possible, a testament to his unwavering faith.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sujatha Kuruppu, their two daughters, Maduka Kuruppu and Gayanie Ong, and son-in-law, Kevin Ong. His legacy is also carried on by his loving siblings, Seetha, Sirisumana, Upali, Kalyani, the late Pemasiri, and their families.

Family and friends are invited to honor Meththananda’s life during a viewing and memorial service at Forest Lawn- Cypress, Patriots Chapel, located at 4471 Lincoln Avenue, Cypress, CA 90630, on September 6, 2024, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM, with religious activities beginning at 6:15 PM. A reception will follow at the family's place of worship, Sri Ratana International Buddhist Center.
