REV. DR. MERLE VINCENT BAILEY
1933-2024
Generous, selfless, extraordinary … these are just a few words that come to mind as we think about Merle Vincent Bailey. Our beloved brother, uncle, great uncle, minister and friend entered eternal life on June 30, 2024.
He is survived by his brother, Byron Bailey, his nieces Dianna Bailey-Thompson, Merrianna Bailey Tolbert and Johanna Bailey Carew. His love and generosity spread to his grand nephews, Byron J. Bailey, Patrick Tolbert and Tate Carew, his grand niece Claire Tolbert and great nephew Graham Tolbert and great nieces Sloane Tolbert and Cadence Bailey.
Merle is predeceased by his parents Vincent and Lois Bailey and sister-in-law Sharon Bailey. This family, as well as his many friends, loved and will miss this incredible man.
Merle was a native of Long Beach, California and his passion for helping others knew no bounds. A graduate of Occidental College, he became a high school teacher and basketball coach at Mayfair High School. Simultaneously, he was a member of the Methodist Church, served as an elder and later, obtained a Doctorate in Theology.
He wore many hats over the years: choir director, key club supporter, youth pastor and associate pastor. Merle blessed many lives, even across the continents. He sponsored the building of a library in Nigeria where he donated books to spread the word of God; his legacy lives on through that wonderful gift.
Merle was a sports enthusiast, he loved donuts, nice cars, enjoyed bowling and was a faithful member of Phi Iota. A loyal friend to many, he was always available to minister to those in need. He gave comfort with his words and presence, whether as a visitor at the hospital, during a sermon, marrying young couples or baptizing babies.
Merle guided many young people on their Christian journeys and his influence as a teacher, coach, minister and a disciple of Christ lives on in others. We all have been blessed to call him brother, uncle, teacher, wonderful counselor, and friend.
He will be honored at a Celebration of Life on Saturday September 28, 2024 at 1PM.
