Maynard Leo Stangeland, 90, born on August 12, 1935, in Lake Wilson, MN, United States, passed away peacefully on July 28, 2026. He resided in Thousand Oaks, CA at the time of his passing. Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, CA.
He is survived by his loving wife Lucy Stangeland, their five children, 16 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren and their families, as well as his younger sister Meredith Fergison.
M.L. to some, Joe to many more, grew up in a family of farmers in Minnesota, graduated from the South Dakota School of Mines, and moved to California where he built a distinguished career as an aerospace engineer and executive at Rocketdyne, a division of Rockwell International. Over decades, he made significant contributions developing propulsion technologies for the nation's defense and space programs, including for the Thor, Jupiter, Atlas, Apollo and Space Shuttle missions.
Joe was an avid fisherman and storyteller, and loved spending time gathered with family.
