Mathew Leonides, a beloved son, brother, and friend, passed away peacefully on June 17, 2025, at CHOC Children’s Hospital. Born on May 2, 2015, at St. Joseph Hospital, Mathew was a gentle soul whose kindness and laughter touched the hearts of all who knew him. He was just ten years old at the time of his passing, but in that short span, he accomplished so much and left an indelible mark on our lives.
Mathew was a beacon of joy and selflessness, always putting the needs of others before his own. His infectious smile could light up even the darkest of days. There was never a moment that he wasn't ready to share a laugh or brighten someone's mood with his playful spirit. A favorite memory shared by family and friends is of their trips to the movie theater. Despite his struggles, Mathew would often fall asleep just minutes into the film, providing a reminder of his relentless spirit even through the exhaustion of the treatments he endured.
Diagnosed with a Midline Diffused Glioma on January 27, 2023, Mathew was given a life expectancy of only six months. Yet, with incredible strength and resilience, he defied those odds, cherishing each moment for two additional years. During this time, he maintained his vibrant personality and found joy in simple pleasures—whether it was fishing, exploring the sights of Las Vegas, spending time at GameStop, or visiting the zoo, he embraced life with open arms.
Mathew's proudest accomplishment was being one of the children to survive the longest while battling DIPG—a testament to his bravery and the love that surrounded him throughout his journey. His family, Norberta (mom), Armando (dad), Kimberly (sister), and Anthony (brother), stood faithfully by his side, drawing strength from one another as they witnessed Mathew's continuous fight against his illness.
Mathew leaves behind memories that will forever warm our hearts. While he may no longer be with us in body, his spirit and the joy he brought into our lives will never fade. Each day, we will carry his laughter with us, recalling the moments when he made us smile—even in the face of adversity.
