Marylove Maloney of Rancho Mirage, California passed away on June 26, 2024 of complications following a cardiac procedure. Born on October 22, 1946 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Marylove and John Patrick Maloney, Jr., she was named after her great-grandmother and was the eldest of six children.
Marylove spent her early years in Mankato, Minnesota where she graduated from Good Counsel Academy. She received a Bachelor of Arts from Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and was a member and officer of Kappa Beta Gamma sorority. She spent her junior year in Italy at the Rome Center of Loyola University (Chicago). While in Rome, she developed a love of Italian art, architecture and music which continued throughout her life. Marylove received a Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1971, after having completed her third year at UCLA.
She began her legal career in Los Angeles as an associate at Warren, Abell & Miller, concentrating on labor law. After a few years, she left the firm to enter academia, serving for seven years as Assistant Professor and Director of the Business Law Program at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles. Following her stint with USC, she spent a number of years as a legal search consultant, specializing in partner placements and firm mergers.
Marylove engaged in various volunteer activities in Chicago, where she lived for several years, and Los Angeles. In Chicago, she served as a grant writer for the Center for Disability and Geriatric Law. In Los Angeles, she assisted Para Los Niños with child development programs and the Coburn School with establishing a parental support group. She also served as a board member of the Early Music Society. Marylove was honored by Los Angeles then-Mayor Tom Bradley for her civic engagement.
A lover and patron of the arts, particularly opera and chamber music, Marylove regularly attended performances in whatever location she found herself. But her true and forever passions were reading and tennis, and she spent countless hours at each.
She was a long-time member of the Los Angeles Tennis Club, University Clubs of both Los Angeles and Chicago, and the University of Southern California Faculty Club.
Curious, tolerant, adventurous and engaging, Marylove will be deeply missed.
She is survived by her companion of 35 years, Joseph R. Lundy, of Rancho Mirage, California, sisters Sean Maloney of St. Louis, Missouri, Deirdre Maloney of Chevy Chase, Maryland and Megan Maloney (Frank “Chip” Jones) of Edina, Minnesota, sister-in-law Lisa G. Maloney, and five nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents and siblings, Catherine Ann Maloney and John Patrick Maloney, III.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, July 19, at 2pm at Forest Lawn Memorial-Parks and Mortuaries, 69855 E. Ramon Rd., Cathedral City, CA 92234.
