Mary Jane Welty

Mary Jane Welty, 92, born on March 21, 1921 in Hanford, California, passed away on March 8, 2014. She resided in Lakewood, California, at the time of her passing. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Cypress, California.
Mary was preceded in death by her loving husband Bob, and her children Jerry and Jean. She is survived by 3 children - George, Linda and Roy, 12 grand children, 13 great-grand-children and three daughters-in-law - Joanie, Joyce and Ellen. Mom had a long full life and will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.
Mary loved her family and friends and reaching out to them. Many of us miss her early morning phone calls. She loved her garden and watching the birds at her feeder.

She grew up on her grandfather's farm in Cocoran, CA, during the depression. She married Paul Shafer in 1940 and they lived in Burbank and then Costa Mesa. They had 3 children together and then Paul died in WWII. She met Bob Welty when his car had a flat in front of her house. They married a short two months later and had 2 more children. Bob and Mary moved to Long Beach about 1947 where they lived and raised their children. In the late 1990's they retired to Central, Utah. After about 9 years in Utah, they moved back to So. California and settled in Bellflower. After Bob's passing, Mary showed us all what a strong independent women she was. She took care of herself and all of us. She tended her garden, and took long walks. She made friends with her neighbors and made new ones welcome.
Mary will be missed.
