Mary Evelyn Tweedie

August 15, 1937 — May 20, 2022

Mary Evelyn Tweedie, received her call home on Friday, May 20, 2022, at 12:10pm. Passing peacefully she was ready to accept her final calling to be with her Lord and Savior, as she told us so.

Mary was born August 15, 1937 in Bangor, Northern Ireland to James and Margaret (Paterson) Hamilton and was married to Roy Tweedie (Aug 2, 1934 – Aug 29, 2016) for 57 wonderful, adventure-filled years! Mary is survived by multiple cousins still in No. Ireland and her only sibling, Ronald (Ronnie) Hamilton of Belfast, and his wife Margert. Ronnie loved her well from afar, regular calls, thoughtful cards and beautiful flowers every birthday, Mother's Day and holidays. Mary loved flowers!

Mary's true adventure began when Roy desired more out of life than he felt Ireland could offer but in addition, he was plain tired of the damp and cold. Even though well-established, Roy an engineer and Mary owning her own beauty salon, (the first of three), they decided to immigrate and begin anew in 1963. Leaving behind family and taking with them their first-born son, 2-year-old Michael Geoff Tweedie, (Dec. 6, 1960 – April 26,2020). After deciding to make a holiday out of the journey, they booked passage on the Queen Mary. A significant decision as they became hooked for life, it turned out to be the first of their 30 cruises, yes 30, that they would take! They traveled the world.

Mary gave birth to her second son, Erik Roy Tweedie in Hollywood on Aug. 23,1964. The first generation American of her family. Mary is also survived by Erik who is married to Jill Tweedie and her two grandchildren, Rachel Marie Tweedie (also a cosmetologist) and Liam Erik Tweedie, all of Arroyo Grande. We would be remiss if we didn't mention her Daisy, her beloved Chihuahua, who now lives with her friend Rita, who loves her as Mary did.

Roy and Mary accepted our Lord and Savior together in 1971. A vivid memory for Erik still.

Living in a number of southern California cities during their working careers they retired to the desert in search of even more sun and dry heat. Moving near long-time friends and Roy's cousin, Billy & wife, Gwen Watson, they enjoyed life together and celebrated every day. Just in time for the holidays, Mary relocated to Arroyo Grande, CA in November of 2021 to be near her son and family to enjoy the rest of her days together. Sadly, they were to be few.

Mary was a talented hair stylist, starting at age 17 and continued her entire working career. She loved the Lord, her family/friends, fashion/bling, food/wine, shopping, travel, lunch dates, dogs (actually all animals), gardening, a good gin & tonic (actually all cocktails), playing cards with her best friend Gwen and the many clubs that she belonged to and was active in; Indio Elks, Dessert Drifters, Miata Car Club, Daughters of the British Empire, Red Hat Society and more… Full disclaimer; list and order not necessarily complete nor accurate. It would depend on who you ask! One would never find Mary without at least one piece of sparkle, glitter or gleam… and if one is good more is better! Dressed to the nines at all times, complete with hair and makeup, even while at home alone. No yoga pants here, pandemic or not!

Mary was loved by all who knew her, even if only for a short time. Always quick with her beautiful smile. Known for her quips of "this, that and the other", "I can't be bothered" and "sufferin' ducks" when losing at cards. She embodied the British stiff upper lip standard and embraced Keep Calm and Carry On. You will be missed Mary, but never forgotten. We will raise our glass to you and toast your memory until we meet again... We love you Mom, Mum, Grandma, Mary.
