Mary "Sue" McVicker, of Palm Desert, CA, died on November 11, 2016 in Palm Desert, CA. She was 77. She was born on December 29, 1938 in Detroit, MI. She attended Gesu Elementary, Immaculata High School, and the University of Detroit. Sue organized and started the Gamma Theta Phi sorority at Immaculata and remained close to her "Gamma Gals" throughout her life. She met her future husband while working at Bendix Corporation. In 1962 she married Richard "Dick" McVicker, and together they had 2 children, Rob and Aimee. They moved to the Los Altos area in the mid-1960s and resided there for 30 years. Dick and Sue were pioneers in the telecommunications field and launched the successful modem manufacturing company Ven-Tel, Inc. in 1975.Sue worked as Vice President at Ven-Tel, Inc. and oversaw human resources with a firm but fair hand.
Sue was extremely social as evidenced by her numerous Reunions with the "Gamma Gals," and her participation in groups such as Welcome Wagon while living in the Los Altos Hills area, and later as a member of the Boulder Creek Twilight Golf Club. She moved to the Palm Desert area in 2004 and served as President (2009 - 2011) and was the Committee Chair on Membership with the Palm Desert Greens Road Runners Golf Club for multiple years. She also enjoyed years of events with the Red Hatters group in Palm Desert. Sue was very active at and devoted to Christ of the Desert Chapel Palm Desert, where she served as an Eucharistic Minister.
Sue adored her 3 grandchildren - Kevin and Casey Mangan, and Melissa McVicker, and often viewed herself as a third parent. She was strong, fun, enjoyed traveling and always knew how to throw a great party. She will be greatly missed by her family, friends and congregation. She is survived by her children and grandchildren and was predeceased by her husband, Dick. A memorial service will be held at Christ of the Desert Chapel, Palm Desert on December 10th at 1pm. Memorial donations may be made in Sue's name to the American Lung Association or Christ of the Desert Chapel.
