Mary was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years, Kenneth L. Johnson; her parents, Bishop Onan and Myrtle Bomar; and her brothers, Bishop Onan Bomar, Jr., and Philip Bomar. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Chelle and Dave Miller; her son, Kenneth D. Mary graduated from Los Angeles Polytechnic High School in 1955; and Los Angeles City College in 1957. On August 30, 1959, she married Ken.
A career woman long before it was fashionable, Mary graduated from the Los Angeles County School of Nursing on August 18, 1960; gave birth to Chelle on August 21, 1960; and successfully sat for the R.N. exam that same year. Mary gave birth to Ken on March 18, 1962.
In 1974, Mary graduated from the California State University, Los Angeles, with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. Prior to retiring in 2000, Mary was employed by the County of Los Angeles, serving as a Supervising Clinic Nurse and later as a certified Public Health Nurse.
Mary was committed to higher education; set high standards for her children and grandchildren; and provided emotional and financial support enabling them to achieve their goals. Mary filled her home with flash cards, board games, chemistry sets, encyclopedias, great books, and an iconic Apple computer; and regularly met with administrators to ensure that Chelle and Ken were enrolled in college preparatory courses. Throughout her life, Mary attended Chelle's, Ken's, Joseph's, and James' graduations, academic events, and athletic competitions, in-person or on-line, including BallerTV.
Mary was an active member of Christ First Baptist Church of Covina, where she participated in a women's Bible study. The family would like to thank Pastor Marco Ramirez for officiating; and Mary's brother, Bishop C. Anthony Bomar, for his reflections.
