Mary Patricia Hybl

January 23, 1927 — May 28, 2013

Mary Patricia Ferguson Hybl (Pat) died graciously in Newport Beach, CA early Tuesday morning, May 28, 2013, from complications related to pneumonia. A long time resident of Fullerton, Mary Pat was born in Richmond Virginia, the youngest of seven children. Her father, William Haigler Ferguson, was a County Supervisor of Henrico County, the estate manager of Curles Neck Dairy in Richmond, and later owner of Malvern Hill Farm, site of the famous Seven Days Battle of the Civil War.

Mary Pat attended Varina High School where she was a cheerleader, playing basketball and speedball. She graduated with a BA in Art and English from Greensboro College in North Carolina. She was the Editor of her award winning college annual, The Echo, and was voted "most popular." She was president of the YWCA campus club and she won a red second place ribbon in the Greensboro horse show. Following graduation she was asked to represent the YWCA youth for the Southern section of the United States in a European Youth Conference to stop war and promote friendship among nations. After marriage she became an art teacher and taught Second grade. Later she obtained her Masters in early childhood development and Education from California State University, Fullerton. She also served on the board of Church Related Early Childhood Education Fellowship of Southern California and as Raymond Elementary School's PTA president, later honored with a lifetime membership.

Her brothers and sisters have preceded her in death except for her brother Jack Ferguson, who ran a Richmond florist business and who still lives on Malvern Hill. Her sister Dorothy (Dot) was a pilot who flew during World War II in the WASP's and later became a lawyer in Washington D.C. Her other sister, Virginia, was the head librarian in Varina, Virginia. Her eldest brother William Jr. became a real estate developer and hotel owner in Newport News. Her brother Richard ran James River Lumber; her brother David (Zeke) Ferguson was a horse breeder and well known polo player. Mary Pat leaves behind a passel of beloved nieces and nephews, many of them living in Virginia and North Carolina.

On Mary Pat's student relief trip to Europe in 1948 she met her future husband, Anthony Robert Hybl, who was doing graduate work over there in psychology after serving in WWII. He was studying the effects of the war on soldiers and refugees. Mary Pat and Tony were married in Richmond in 1949. They then moved to Tony's hometown of Chicago while he finished his PhD at the University of Chicago. They moved on to Iowa, Louisiana, and Ohio while Tony served internships and residencies at various VA hospitals.

In 1960, they moved to Fullerton after Tony was offered a job in the newly developing field of industrial psychology at Hunt/Wesson Foods. He was on the forefront of this emerging field, developing testing methodologies for executives. Mary Pat became the director of the Nursery School at First Baptist Church of Fullerton. Know to everyone in California as Pat Hybl, she was a member of a long running foreign food club. She loved horse racing, and her dogs Hoska, Toto, Lady, Flash, and Tigger; she is survived by her pound rescue puppy, Mini.

The family lost a wonderful husband and dear father when Dr. Hybl passed in 1998. Mary Pat and Tony had four children, who all graduated from Fullerton Union High School and various California Universities. All now live in Southern California. She was a loving Mother, Grandmother and Mother-in-law to:

Her Children: Carol Hybl Zepfel, Gail Hybl Medeiros, Gary Anton Hybl, and Nancy Hybl Bostwick.
Their Spouses: Donald Zepfel, Robin Waller Hybl and Jim Bostwick.
She was Godmother to her nephew David Ferguson

Affectionately known as "Mamo," Mary Pat leaves behind twelve grandchildren who brought great joy into her life: Edward (Ted) Zepfel, Margaret (Meg) Zepfel, Andrew Zepfel, Rachel Medeiros, Patrick Medeiros, Shannon Hybl, Kaitlyn Hybl, Madison Hybl, Jillian Hybl, James Bostwick, Elizabeth Bostwick, and Caroline Bostwick.

Mary Pat's early Ferguson Scot-Irish ancestors arrived in the new world and settled in the Yadkin River Valley in Wilkes County North Carolina in the 1770's, in the area that is now the town of Ferguson. Several of her great uncles died in the Civil War, and William E. Wiseman, an ancestor of her mother, Ada Myrtle Dean, was the "Cobbler to the Revolutionary Army," following the Over-mountain Boys in his wagon to their crucial victory at the Battle of Kings Mountain in South Carolina. Among her other ancestors was Mary Browne, born in Plymouth Massachusetts in 1627, daughter of John Brown who sailed on the Mayflower, and Thomas Garnett, who arrived at Jamestown Colony on the "Swan" in 1610.
