Marvin Leonard Crawford, Sr. was born on March 12, 1926 in Los Angeles, California. Marvin was the son of James Crawford and Emily Georgia (Gough) Crawford (Redd). His parents, his older brother Leon "Buster" Crawford, and his husband and partner of 53 years, George Frederickson, are all deceased. He is survived by his two children, Carmen K. Wadley and Leonard M. Crawford, both of whom live in California. He is also survived by five grandchildren; David Wadley, Camille K. Wadley, Christopher G.A. Wadley, Amber C. Crawford-Metz, and Marvin L. Crawford III. He is blessed to be survived by a great-granddaughter, Melanie Lynn Wadley. His two nieces, "Joy" Jo Ann Bennett and Cecily Yates, both currently live in Oregon.

Marvin lived most of his life in Los Angeles, California. After graduating from Polytechnic High School, he enlisted in the armed forces in 1944. When he completed his time in the service, he attended college at Humbolt Teachers College (currently Humbolt California State University) where he earned his B.A. in education in 1950.

Marvin returned to Los Angeles where he began his successful career in education with his first teaching assignment in the Willowbrook School District. He was subsequently hired by the Enterprise School District, where he worked as the principal of Mark Twain Elementary School. In 1958 he earned his M.A. in education from Long Beach State College and in 1963 became an assistant superintendent for the Enterprise School District. His hard work paid off in 1966, when he was awarded the position of superintendent of the Enterprise School District. From 1968 until his retirement in 1976 he was the assistant superintendent of elementary schools for Compton Unified Schools.

Marvin L. Crawford, Sr. died peacefully at home on September 11, 2014.
