Marvin "Wayne" Carlson

March 24, 1936 — July 12, 2024

Marvin Wayne Carlson, known by most as Wayne, 88, passed away on July 12, 2024, from complications of leukemia. He is survived by his devoted wife of twenty-five years, Linda Brown Carlson, two children, Brian Wayne Carlson and Dean Roland Carlson, three grandchildren, and a great-grandson.

His father, Marvin Andrew Carlson, and his mother, Anna Thoma Carlson, preceded him in death.

Wayne was born on March 24, 1936, in Pasadena, CA, and lived in San Marino before moving to Rancho Mirage in 2000, where he was active in The Spring’s Country Club Homeowners Association for several years.

Wayne’s educational journey was marked by significant achievements. He earned his bachelor’s degree from California State and his master’s degree from Redland University. His career at the Los Angeles Unified School District spanned thirty-seven years, during which he held various roles, starting as a teacher at Roosevelt High School and later at the district level. Wayne’s most notable contribution was the creation of the Los Angeles Adopt-A-School Program, a model that was adopted by schools across California and beyond. His focus was always on the students, not personal gain, as he believed, “It is amazing how much we can get done when we don’t care who gets the credit.”

Wayne’s influence extended beyond his local community. He served as a board member of the National Association of Partners in Education, contributed to the White House National Partnerships in Education Program, and was a member of the President’s Advisory Council on Private Sector Initiatives. His national service further solidified his reputation as a dedicated and influential figure in the field of education.

Wayne’s gentle, caring nature made him a friend of everyone he met. He leaves us with a legacy of love, and he will be missed by all those who knew him.

Arrangements are under the care of Forest Lawn, Cathedral City, CA.
