In Loving Memory of Martha Rivero
Martha Rivero, 90, born in 1935 to Isabel Jaramillo & Emilio Rodriguez, passed away in September 2025, leaving behind a legacy of resilience, conviction, and unwavering authenticity. Raised by her adoptive parents, Albert & Jovita Alvarado, in Los Angeles, Martha cherished all of her parents and carried their love and values proudly throughout her life.
She attended Jefferson High School, where she thrived in track & field and the dance club—early signs of the energy and flair that would define her. In 1957, she married Arthur Gutierrez, and together they raised five children in a home filled with music, laughter, and the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. Together, they later welcomed eight grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren
Martha was a domestic force of nature. She made costumes for school plays, sewed curtains that transformed rooms, and could tailor anything with the precision of a seasoned seamstress. Her creativity wasn’t just practical—it was personal, a reflection of her care and her unmistakable style.
Later in life, she found love again and married Jose Rivero, with whom she shared nearly 40 years of companionship. She also began her professional career and later retired from the Attorney General’s Office, where she worked for many years as a legal secretary. Professionally, Martha was admired for her sharp intellect and sense of humor.
Martha was a woman of deep conviction and fierce independence. She spoke her truth with clarity and candor, never one to bend for convenience or approval. Her resilience carried her through life’s challenges, and her authenticity made her unforgettable. With razor-sharp instincts and a dry sense of humor, she had a knack for seeing through nonsense and saying exactly what needed to be said. Martha lived with purpose, laughed with heart, and loved without hesitation. She never asked for permission to be herself—and that’s precisely why people admired, respected, and adored her.
She found joy in gardening, watching novellas, practicing tai chi, reading, and cooking alongside her husband. She was a proud and skilled salsa dancer, often the life of the party with her rhythm and radiant smile.
She is survived by her husband, Jose Rivero, son Arthur (Tammi), daughters Angelica (Brian) & Bernadette, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Isabel Jaramillo, Emilio Rodriguez, Albert & Jovita Alvarado, her siblings, Pete, Armando & Mary and her beloved daughters Annette (Gilbert) and Denise (Robert).
