Marilyn Jane De Groot passed away at her home in Brentwood from natural causes on March 30, 2014. She was born on October 20, 1941 to Ernest and Dorothy De Groot in Artesia, CA. She grew up on the family dairy farm with siblings Janice, Charles, Carol and Doreane where she developed her strong work ethic. She graduated from Valley Christian Schools in 1959 and continued her education earning her registered nursing certificate at Fullerton Community College in 1961. She began her 43-year nursing career at Bellwood Hospital for one year before moving with her adventurous college friends to San Francisco where she worked at San Francisco General Hospital during the 60's. While there, she met Mike Nelson and married in 1969. They moved to Denver in 1970 and were married for 9 years. After 14 years in Colorado her love of family drew her back to Southern California initially residing in San Monica and later owning a condo in Brentwood. She worked as a RN in Pulmonology, then as a caregiver for (Stevie) and retired from her nursing career after working at LA Veterans Hospital for 12 years. She was a tireless hard worker.
In Marilyn's early years she enjoyed travelling adventures to Europe and Mexico with her friends. She enjoyed an annual Labor Day trip to Sausalito, CA with her friend Relissa. She shared her presence at family holidays, birthdays, graduations, weddings and vacations at San Clemente Beach and with dear friends to Palm Desert. She was a prolific book reader and loved political discourse. She was also a gourmet cook who had an appreciation for the LA arts and would frequently enjoy concerts, museums, restaurants, great food, wines and cheering for her beloved Lakers.
Marilyn was quick to respond with her generous heart in giving of her time and resources helping her family with medical needs. She was a strong advocate and instrumental in guiding family members to quality care and treatment.
We will miss, Marilyn, our beloved sister, aunt and friend. We are comforted knowing that we all belong to our faithful Savior Jesus Christ. Rest in Peace Auntie M we miss you!
