Marilyn Calara, a beloved mother, grandmother, and esteemed writer, passed away peacefully on her 70th birthday, March 21, 2025. She was born in Quezon City in 1955, and from a young age, it was clear that her life would be characterized by her profound love for words and the connections they fostered.
For 40 years, Marilyn dedicated herself to the National Housing Association as a writer and editor. Her articulate contributions graced the pages of documents for the Vice Presidents of the Philippines and other notable figures, showcasing her remarkable talent and commitment to her craft. She not only wrote but weaved stories that resonated with many, inspiring others with her profound insights and genuine passion for her work.
Marilyn was an avid advocate for education, having pursued her studies at the most prestigious university in the Philippines, where she earned her Doctorate in Education Administration. Her dedication to learning extended far beyond formal education; her love for writing and reading permeated every aspect of her life, reflecting her insatiable curiosity.
Family meant everything to Marilyn. She treasured the moments spent with her daughter, Mae, her son, Franz, and her only granddaughter, Isla, who instantly became her best friend the moment they met. The joy of family gatherings lit up her life, and she held dear every conversation, whether about the mundane or monumental decisions. She had an exceptional ability to make anyone feel valued, offering her opinion and guidance selflessly. Her nurturing presence and willingness to put others before herself defined her loving personality in a way that all who knew her will forever cherish.
Marilyn also found solace in nurturing her plants, spending countless hours watering and tending to them, just as she did with her loved ones. Her selfless nature reflected a heart that constantly sought to give, making her a beacon of love and kindness within her family and community.
She is survived by her daughter, Mae; her son, Franz; and her precious granddaughter, Isla, who will carry forward her legacy of warmth and compassion. Marilyn is also fondly remembered by her deceased family members: her father, Alejo; her sister, Judy; and her brother, Bobot, with whom she shared countless memories.
