Maria del Socorro Esparza January 9, 1951 – August 14, 2024
Maria del Socorro Esparza, 73, passed away on August 14, 2024, finding peace after a life well-lived. Born on January 9, 1951, in Corpus Christi, Texas, Socorro was the youngest child of Evanglina and Pablo Esparza. In her childhood, she moved from Texas to California with her parents, seeking better opportunities and a brighter future. She graduated from Our Lady of Loretto High School in 1969, an all-girls institution that shaped her strong character and independent spirit.
Socorro planted roots in Whittier, California, a city she loved dearly and where she became an integral part of the community. She was actively involved in St. Mary of Assumption Church, participating in parades and planning sonatas, contributing to her city's cultural and spiritual life.
Her professional life was spent at Sargeant's Sporting Goods, where Socorro found not just a job but a true passion. She formed a deep friendship with her boss, Dave McCoy, whom she truly loved and respected. Their bond was one of mutual admiration and trust. Socorro also adored Dave’s son, Benjamin, who affectionately referred to her as "Nina," reflecting their close and loving relationship.
Socorro was a woman of impeccable style and taste. A die-hard fan of USC and the Raiders, she brought the same enthusiasm to everything she did. She especially loved the holidays, decorating her home in grand style for Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and the 4th of July, creating magical memories for all who visited. She also deeply cherished her best friend Xotchi and her family, who held a special place in her heart.
Socorro was preceded in death by her beloved older brothers, Juan de Dios Esparza and Guadalupe Esparza. Though she did not have children of her own, Socorro was deeply devoted to her family, serving as a guiding light for her seven nieces and nephews, nine great-nieces and nephews, three great-great-nieces and one great-great nephew. She cherished each of them, offering wisdom, love, and an unwavering sense of support.
Dementia played a crucial role in the final chapter of Socorro's life, but it never diminished her spirit or the love she had for those around her. She lived unapologetically, embracing who she was with confidence and grace. While she had many friends who adored her, Socorro’s traits only added to her unique and unforgettable personality.
Socorro will be remembered for her strength, kindness, great style, and deep love for her family and community. Her legacy will continue to inspire those who knew her, reminding them of the importance of living authentically, cherishing the bonds of family, and celebrating life with flair. Now, she is at peace.
A memorial service will be held on September 7th at 10:00 AM at St. Mary’s of Assumption, 7215 Newlin Ave, Whittier, CA 90602, where friends and family will gather to celebrate Socorro’s life and the indelible mark she left on all who knew her. She will be interned at Covina Hills—Forest Lawn at noon in the Woodlands Section. Family and Friends would like to extend an invitation to lunch immediately following the interment; more details will follow soon.
Socorro, your presence will be deeply missed, but your spirit will forever remain in our hearts.
