Margaret Theresa Schmidt

Margaret Theresa Schmidt, 95, born on November 11, 1921, in Rochester, New York, passed away September 9, 2017. She resided in Glendale at the time of her passing. Margaret first traveled to California in 1948 to visit her sister Mary and fell in love with Los Angeles. She decided to move to Los Angeles and soon found a place to live along with a job in Atwater Village. While shopping at the local market, she met George Schmidt, who she married that same year. Soon she became the devoted Mother to Richard, Cathy and Lisa. She was always active in her children's activities and school and was PTA President for a term. Margaret loved her new home in Atwater Village and even invited her dear sister Gloria to live with her until she found her own place. Margaret also loved to visit her sister Mary who lived in Silver Lake along with her husband and son, Peter. Soon her sister Betty would come to visit and she, too, fell in love with Los Angeles. Before it was over, her Mom and Dad moved from New York came to Los Angeles when her Dad retired from the railroad. They bought a house around the corner, so her entire family were near by with the exception of her brother George, who preferred to stay in Rochester, New York, but who was a frequent visitor.

Margaret lived the remaining years of her life in Atwater Village. She was always active in the community and attended college at Glendale College to enrich her life. She loved to travel and made many friends who loved her life and vitality. She could be seen shopping in Glendale, riding her bike all around Atwater and singing in the choir at the local church. Her children were the primary focus of her life and when her son Richard married wife Patty, Margaret soon became the proud Grandmother of Brian & Jane. She loved to put on parties at her home for friends and relatives. All of the holidays throughout the year were her passion and everyone could expect a wonderful dinner and multiple deserts demonstrating her wonderful cooking skills.

Late in life, Margaret was diagnosed with Alzheimer's and as it progressed she needed to move to the Broadway Manor in Glendale. She received excellent care from a loving group of healthcare staff where she was loved. She also enjoyed her daily visits from daughters Cathy and Lisa, singing and making jokes. Son Richard would also visit when he could. Margaret lived a wonderfully rich life and will be remembered by all who knew her. She is missed, but she is finally at peace and free of disease.

Thank you to the many friends and relatives who attended her funeral in Forest Lawn, Glendale, a place where she was a frequent visitor to the beautiful parkland and museums.
