Plaistow, NH: Margaret M. (McCabe) Hughes, 93, of Plaistow, died on Wednesday, September 11, 2013 at her daughter's home in Groveland, surrounded by her loving family.

Born in Kingston, NY, daughter of the late John and Hazel (Deyoe) McCabe, she was educated in schools in Wallkill, NY and earned her teaching degree from the State University of New York at New Paltz and began her teaching career in Newburg, NY.

Following her marriage to Paul E. Hughes in 1947, she moved to North Arlington, NJ and later moved to Haverhill, MA. She also lived in West Newbury and was a longtime resident of Groveland, where she was an active member of Saint Patrick's Parish and the Catholic Daughters of America, serving as a former Grand Regent.

She stayed at home for several years enjoying being a housewife, mother and homemaker for her husband and eight children. In 1968, she returned to the classroom as a substitute teacher at Groveland Elementary School until her retirement in 1987.

A resident of Plaistow for the past twenty-six years, Mrs. Hughes was a member of Saint Luke the Evangelist Parish and the former Holy Angels Parish, where she served as a Eucharistic Minister and also as a member of the Social Committee and the Women's Guild. She was also a longtime volunteer for St. Jude Council of The Knights of Columbus. She and her late husband Paul, who predeceased her in 1996 after fifty-four years of marriage were the recipients of several awards due to their extensive volunteer work.

Mrs. Hughes enjoyed her large extended family and the many celebrations that she shared with them including her ninetieth birthday celebration and the following three anniversaries of that milestone. She still enjoyed camping trips this past year as well as white water rafting, zip-lining, hot air balloon rides, motorcycling and the several trips that she took over the last several months with family members including to Disney World and Ireland and other favorite destinations around the country that were part of her "bucket list".


She is survived by her five sons, Michael and his wife Gail of Salem, Oregon, James and his wife Constance of Haverhill, Paul and his fiance Sharon Woodward of Berwick, ME, John and his wife Karin of Newton, NH, and Richard and his wife Cathy of Waterville, VT., her three daughters, Catherine and her husband Gerald Hill of Groveland, MA, Mary and her husband Kevin Nicklas of Merrimac, MA and Dorothy and her husband Shawn Hayden of Stowe, VT, also fifteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren, her sisters, Catherine Cook and Frances Dobson of New Windsor, NY and Dorothy Blonde of Wallkill, NY and several beloved nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.

Relatives and friends may call on Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 3 to 7 p.m. at Brookside Chapel & Funeral Home, 116 Main St., Route 121A, Plaistow. Her funeral will be held on Monday at 9 a.m. from the funeral home with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. in Holy Angels Church of St. Luke the Evangelist Parish, Plaistow. Burial will follow in Holy Angels Cemetery.
