Marcie Johnson

July 27, 1932 — January 30, 2024

Marcie J. Johnson was born in Carthage Texas, July 27, 1932, to the parents of Nellie McGee and James Hampton Sr.  The family moved to Coachella Valley in 1942 where she attended school and graduated from Coachella Valley High School.  She furthered her education and attended the College of the Desert Training for Nursing where she graduated in 1966 and committed her life to nursing.  She was happiest when she was helping and caring for someone in need.  She was a caring and committed nurse for forty years.  She met and married Nelvin Prior and to this union they had two children Willie Ray Prior and Wynolia (Wynn) Smith.  After the dissolution of this marriage, she met and married Pete Johnson and to this union they had one son Ronald Edward Johnson.  Marcie accepted Christ at an early age while attending Mount Calvary Holy Church in Indio California under the late Bishop C. E. Simmons and from there she moved to Redlands where she joined Community Missionary Baptist Church under the late Bishop Herman Hubbard.  She moved back to Indio where she became a member of First AME Church of Indio where she worked faithfully in various capacities until her health began to fail and she moved back to Redlands with her daughter and reunited with Community Missionary Baptist Church under Doctor Donald Robinson where she became a member of the Mother’s Board.

She was truly loved and cherished by her family.  She was preceded in death by her husband Pete Johnson, son Ronald Johnson, her parents Nellie Chappell-Fites and James Hampton Sr, her sister Theresa White, her brother James Hampton Jr and her sister Audrey Strange.

She leaves to treasure her precious memories two children, Willie Ray Prior (Ellen), Wynolia Yolanda Smith (Tony).   She leaves four grandchildren, Stephanie Saunders (Kenny), Ivy Byrd (Isado), Derek Prior (Cynthia) and Tanya Childress (DeWaan), nine great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, church family and friends.
