Marcia Ruth Hicks passed away April 30, 2024 after several months in convalescent care. She was 84 years old.
Marcia was born April 9, 1940, in Muncie, Indiana, to Anna “Marie” Soules and Harold William Dinkins. She was the first of five children; her sister Linda, the only sibling to survive infancy.
Marcia had fond memories of her childhood in Muncie, many involving her lifelong friends, Diane Frey and Janet Baker. They loved going to basketball games and the State Fair. She loved the lilac trees in the park behind their house, and swimming in the community pool. Her family always had pets.
Marcia began working early to contribute to her family’s income. Her first job was collecting laundry from a beauty shop, and pulling it in a little red wagon to the cleaners.
Just prior to her 16th birthday, in 1956, her family moved to Burbank, California. She got a job at Thrifty's drug store and worked there until 1967. Other jobs she held included waitressing and working as a parking attendant at the Burbank airport.
Marcia bore two children Mark Daniel Hurley and Tammy Marie Hicks. She was a devoted mother putting the needs of her children above her own.
Two pivotal events in Marcia’s life were the passing of her mother after a long battle with breast cancer and the traumatic death of her daughter (aged 32) along with an unborn grandchild, due to a car accident. She never stopped grieving the loss of her daughter, Tammy.
After Marcia retired she moved to Santa Clarita, California in 2018, to live closer to her son and his family.
Marcia’s greatest love and concern was for her family -her parents, her children, and her grandchildren. She enjoyed volunteering in various community organizations, i.e., the library, the hospital, and Red Cross. She treasured her membership in The Church Of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, visiting the Los Angeles temple first for her endowments and later in order to be sealed to her parents and daughter. She always felt a strong desire to do her family history. She enjoyed her associations with fellow members of her congregations in Burbank and Santa Clarita, and there were many who aided her in so many ways, especially as she struggled with declining health in her later years. Her family is profoundly grateful for the kindness of these individuals.
Marcia is survived by her sister, Linda, her son, Mark (Anjanae), her grandchildren, Kyle (Stephanie), Joshua (Dustin), Jordyn, Shandee, Toree, Gwendolyn, Lauren, Sabrina, and great-grandchildren Carter, Noelle, Jocelyn, Cole, Maisie, and Daegan.
