Maggy Shemmassian, age 69, was born in Beirut, Lebanon on July 14, 1954, and died peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, August 31, 2023. She resided in Studio City, CA at the time of her passing. She was the daughter of the late Haig Yeghiayan and Shake Yeghiayan and the sister of the late Viken Yeghiayan. Maggy is survived by her two sons, Aram (Natalie) of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Shirag (Willa) of San Diego, CA, their father, Vahram Shemmassian, her brother, Vahe Yeghiayan (Aida), and her uncle, Heratch Doumanian (Sona). “Nene” is also survived by her five grandchildren: Van, Daron, Kami, Gars, and Melik.
Maggy spent the majority of her career as a special education teacher with the Los Angeles Unified School District. She completed her Bachelor’s degree in French at the California State University, Los Angeles, and her Master’s degree in Special Education through National University. She was proud of her Armenian heritage and Lebanese nationality, and was fluent in Armenian, Arabic, French, and English. Maggy was an avid moviegoer, champion of students with disabilities, had an amazing eye for selecting the cutest outfits for her grandchildren, and was the ultimate cheerleader for her children and grandchildren. She was an active member of the Los Angeles Armenian community and attended United Armenian Congregational Church (UACC).
The funeral service and burial will be held at 9am on Friday, September 15, 2023, at Forest Lawn, Hollywood Hills, Old North Church, 6300 Forest Lawn Drive, Los Angeles, CA 90068. Family and friends are invited to gather afterwards at the Fireside Room of UACC. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the American Cancer Society
