Magdalena Masigla Manabat, affectionately known by everyone as Nanay, peacefully departed on May 15, 2023, at the age of 93, surrounded by her beloved family. Born May 27, 1929, in Manila, Philippines, Nanay embarked on a life journey that overflowed with love, culinary excellence, and unbreak-able bonds.
Nanay had a love for the culinary arts which she lovingly shared with those closest to her. Her passion led her to become valedictorian of the Araullo Culinary Arts program. She used her passion to become a successful professional chef at her Aunt Luisa Masigla's restaurant in Manila, where delighted patrons relished her Chinese-Filipino fusion dishes for over thirty years.
In 1980, Nanay embraced a new chapter in her life, immigrating to America to reunite with her daughter and granddaughter, after the passing of her beloved husband, Godofredo Manabat. She would affectionately say that he was her "one and only true love." Their love story remains a beacon of inspiration due to their unwavering bond.
Nanay's devotion to her family knew no bounds, as she was a nurturing and loving mother to her two children, Clarisa Manabat and Reynoso Manabat. Her heart overflowed with pride and joy as she witnessed the growth and accomplishments of her six grandchildren: Charlaine Reese, Claire Mamaradlo, Robin Manabat, Paul Nguyen, Marielle Manabat, and Patrick Mamaradlo. Nanay's love extended to her ten great-grandchildren: Nicole Perez, Robynne Perez, Ray Sphenzer Manabat, Aebiel Djulianne Apuyan, Zachary Manabat, Akeesha Lei Apuyan, Adrielle Amaris Manabat, Phoenix Trinity Nguyen, Amara Hughlene Apuyan, and Clark John Nguyen.
Nanay possessed a sharp wit and a vibrant personality that packed every gathering with laughter and happiness. She filled every heart with love, by filling every belly with her famous delicious cooking. Her zest for life was exemplified by her joy for singing, dancing, and traveling alongside her niece, Ana-Marie Navarro. Nanay's affection for Elvis Presley remains a cherished part of her identity.
As we bid farewell to Nanay, our hearts are filled with a profound sense of love, loss, and remem-brance. Her love for her family and her unwavering faith in God served as guiding lights throughout her life. Though we mourn her loss, we take solace in the belief that she is joined in God's peaceful embrace and eternal tranquility with her beloved husband, Godofredo, and treasured granddaughter, Claire. Nanay's legacy will forever be etched in our hearts, reminding us of the immeasurable impact she had on our lives.
