Lys Deetjen

October 4, 1939 — November 25, 2025

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Lys Deetjen, who departed this world on November 25, 2025. Born on October 4, 1939, in the enchanting coastal city of Cap Haïtien, Haiti, Lys came to the United States of America in 1961.

Lys was a man of varied interests and lived a life rich with diverse experiences and profound connections. He delighted in the rhythm of Latin dancing, revisiting tales of antiquity through readings of Greek and Roman mythology, and curating a cherished collection of classic movies from Hollywood’s Golden era. In his retirement years, he could be found playing golf with his sons and their friends and making new friends on the golf course. Each of these passions enriched his life and provided a foundation for spirited conversations with those fortunate enough to share in his company.

A man of the world, Lys carved a successful career in international banking, a vocation that afforded him the opportunity to traverse the captivating landscapes of Europe and Asia. His charisma and fluency in several languages—including French, Creole, Spanish, English, and spoken German—enhanced his ability to forge meaningful relationships wherever he roamed. He was not only an astute banker but also an individual whose warmth and knowledge left an indelible mark on colleagues and friends alike.

His commitment to service was manifested through his military tenure, as Lys proudly served in the US Army in Germany for three years. This experience contributed to his already rich tapestry of life and would later influence his views and interactions with others.

Lys leaves behind a loving family who will hold his memory dear. He is survived by his devoted wife, Waiman, and his cherished children: Sarah, Eric, Lys Wesley, and Steffen. His legacy continues through his grandchildren—Steven, Joseph, and Michael. Sisters Marlene, Eveline, and Suzie, cousins Magda, Yolaine, Marie Carmelle and many others, and nephews and nieces shall also mourn the loss of a brother, cousin, and uncle whose vivacious spirit will echo in their hearts.

Preceding him in death are his beloved mother, Suza Auguste, and father, Christian Deetjen, alongside his sister Marie-Claude and brothers Michel and Raynald, as well as his aunt Maria Francia Auguste. These significant figures who shaped him may be absent, yet it is with their spirits that he now joins.

To honor Lys's remarkable life, a visitation will take place on December 9, 2025, commencing at 11:00 AM at Forest Lawn Glendale, followed by a funeral service later that same day at 2:30 PM at the Little Church of the Flowers. Another opportunity to celebrate his extraordinary life will be on December 11, 2025, with a continuation of the funeral services at 3:00 PM.

As we gather to pay tribute to Lys Deetjen, let us remember him not only for his many accomplishments but for the warmth, kindness, and connection he brought into our lives. His spirit will endure through the many hearts he touched, a beacon of love, laughter, and unity that shall never dim.
