Luis Umana

July 4, 1953 — November 28, 2024

Luis Umaña was born on July 4, 1953, and departed unexpectedly on November 28, 2024, at the age of 71. He was known as a dignified, hardworking, and honest man of God. He was also an admirable and respected husband, father, brother, grandfather, and uncle.

Luis was born in Chalatenango, El Salvador, to Ruben Umaña and Maria Magdalena Villeda. He was the first of eight children, followed by Carlos, Oscar, Ruben, Blanca, Elida, Maria, and Milagros. He immigrated to the United States in 1969, where he eventually met his wife, Jeanne. They were married and had their first daughter, Luisa, in 1986, followed by their second daughter, Chelsea, in 1990. His grandson, Anthony, who proudly carries the middle name Luis, was born in 2017. He was also an uncle and granduncle to many nieces and nephews, of whom he was immensely proud.

Luis was a highly respected member of his church, Centro Cristiano Pentecostal, where he often spent time working, helping, and teaching others useful construction skills. In recent months, he had begun bringing his grandson, with whom he loved spending time and who also cherished those moments.

People who knew Luis appreciated his special personality. He was an excellent storyteller, often sharing fond memories of his childhood in El Salvador, filled with adventures swimming in rivers and playing with his siblings. He also shared his experiences hunting for food and caring for the animals on his ranch to help provide for his family. A sentimental man, he enjoyed reminiscing about when his children were little girls and kept photos of them as children on his desk, along with old letters from family and friends in El Salvador, which he would look at regularly. Luis had a great sense of humor and enjoyed playing pranks and games. When his daughters moved into their own homes, he would surprise them with improvements and then playfully ask, "Do you notice anything different?" Sometimes he would let them search for hours before telling them what he changed.

He was preceded in death by his father, Ruben; his mother, Maria; and his sister, Milagros. He is survived by his wife, Jeanne; his daughters, Luisa (Anthony) and Chelsea; his brothers, Carlos, Oscar, and Ruben; his sisters, Blanca (Saul), Elida, and Maria; and his grandson Anthony.

Luis resided in Van Nuys, CA, at the time of his passing, where he had many friends and neighbors whom he often helped generously, taking great pride in his work. He will be dearly missed by all who had the pleasure of knowing him.

His funeral service is scheduled to take place on Saturday, December 21, 2024, at 3 o'clock in the afternoon. A visitation will take place earlier that day, from 11 o'clock in the morning until 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Both the ceremony and visitation will be held at Forest Lawn in Hollywood Hills, located at 6300 Forest Lawn Dr, Los Angeles, CA 90068.
