Luis F. Devera

October 10, 1934 — October 23, 2017

Mr. Luis Felipe Devera, 83, passed away on Monday, October 23, 2017 with his wife and children by his side.

Luis was born on October 10, 1934 in Mayantoc, Tarlac Philippines to Laureano and Brigida Devera. He joined the United States Navy at 18 years of age. Luis spent most of his career at sea in a navy vessel. He was stationed in Guam, San Diego, and Great Lakes, Illinois. At the age of 25, Luis traveled back to the Philippines to marry his neighbor and childhood sweetheart, Memia. Luis retired after 21 years of service in the United States Navy. His decision to join the US Navy at such an early age provided his family the opportunity to live a comfortable life in the United States. Luis is survived by his wife, Memia, his four children (Loumielyn, Jojo, Noel and Melody), nine grandchildren (Beto, Kai, Jay, Joleen, Kobe, Kaitlyn, Isabella, Madison, and Marissa) and two great grandchildren (Kenzo and Kaiya). In the Philippines, he is survived by his only sister, Linda and her family.

Luis was a quiet and kind man. He enjoyed the basic pleasures of eating, drinking, reading, and watching television. Although he was a man of few words, everything he said was either valuable or funny. He would say, without hesitation, he was the best looking one in the family. Luis, a simple man born in a small rural province in the Philippines, was also very intelligent. He was one of the very few who successfully passed a challenging test to serve in the United States Navy.

Luis loved the Philippines. He spent as much time in the Philippines as he did in the United States. It was only when he became too weak to endure long flights that he spent his last years of life in Los Angeles, California.
