Lorine P. "Honey" Bushman
of Monkton, Maryland and La Quinta, California

Lorine "Honey" Bushman passed away on August 31, 2012 after a brief battle with lung cancer. She was 73 years old, 55 years of which were spent with her adoring husband, Robert.

Honey was born on February 12, 1939, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Conrad Protzman and Lorine McClelland Protzman. Upon seeing his newborn daughter, her father remarked, "That's my Honey," and the nickname followed her throughout her life. Her siblings, who survive her, are Conrad "Sonny" Protzman, James Protzman, and Sharon Klipner.

Honey attended Notre Dame Preparatory School in Baltimore and graduated from Towson High School in 1956. She received a scholarship to Gettysburg College. That same year, she met Robert R. Bushman and they were married on December 28, 1957.

They soon had four blue-eyed boys, which she often referred to as "the best and most important accomplishment" of their marriage. First came Robert Roy Bushman, Jr., followed by Christopher Charles, Stephen Stuart and then David Douglas. As was the case with their father, all their sons were given middle names associated with Scottish history. Her sons gave her five grandchildren, Carrie Akins, Melinda Hershner, Robert Roy Bushman III, Stephanie Bushman and Angela Bushman. Honey and Bob also had four great grandchildren (and counting).

Honey had a great talent and passion for gardening and landscaping, as well as interior design, and she created beautiful homes and gardens in Monkton, Maryland and La Quinta, California. She knew everything about her plants, right down to their scientific names, and produced not just beautiful flowers and trees, but delicious fruits and vegetables for her family. After moving to PGA West in Southern California, she became involved in designing "Desert Scape" projects for common areas, which included thousands of acres in La Quinta. She had become an advocate of "Desert Scape" and encouraged the 3,000 residents of PGA West to transition from flowering annuals to desert plants. Much of the furnishings and cabinetry in each of her homes was custom-built or even hand-carved according to her meticulous instructions and personal design.

Robert and Honey owned and operated The Mann & Parker Lumber Company, moving it from Baltimore to New Freedom, Pennsylvania in 1972. Honey played a vital role in the success of the family business, serving on the Board of Directors as Secretary.

Outside of family, home and business, Honey's main interest was golf. She and Bob were longtime members of the Hillendale Country Club in Phoenix, Maryland, where they hosted many parties, meetings and family gatherings, including their 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Honey played golf at every opportunity, as her hectic schedule would allow, and was both a well-respected partner and opponent among her golfing friends. Her four boys have fond childhood memories of their time spent at "the Club" with their parents, whether joining them for dinner after a round of golf or spending afternoons at the pool under their mother's watchful eye.

Honey Bushman was a true Queen Bee, a strong, smart, generous and highly organized matriarch who safely guided her four boys through their exploits in the countryside and into adulthood. She served as a Cub Scout Den Mother, even hosting an annual campfire program at the family's 25-acre property in Monkton, Maryland. She sacrificed to drive long distances every day in order to be able to send her boys to Catholic Schools in Towson, Maryland. She created wonderful and personal Thanksgiving meals for her extended family and transformed her house into a Christmas Wonderland.

Honey was always very stylish and enjoyed shopping for clothing and shoes through the many catalogs that came to her house. The UPS delivery man made several stops at the Bushmans' every week! She then discovered the QVC home shopping network on television and became a longtime faithful customer, making generous purchases for every member of her family.

Honey had a big personality, very outgoing and friendly, that made an immediate positive impression on everyone she met. She was greatly admired, respected and loved by her many friends, business associates and, mostly, her grateful and devoted husband and family who will miss her very much, and are deeply saddened that she is gone from their lives far too soon.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, September 5, 2012 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in La Quinta, CA at 10:00 a.m.with a Funeral Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. Honey's family has advised that a Celebration of Life honoring Honey will be held at PGA West in La Quinta, CA at a later date to allow more of Honey's dear friends and acquaintances to attend.

A viewing will be held at Peaceful Alternatives Funeral Home in Timonium, Maryland on Sunday, September 9, 2012 from 2:00 p.m. – 6:00 p.m. A visitation will be held on Monday, September 10, 2012 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. with a Funeral Mass at 11:00 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Church in New Freedom, Pennsylvania. A reception will follow.

In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations to Eisenhower Medical Center's (Rancho Mirage, CA) "Annual Fund", The American Heart Association or The American Cancer Society in Honey's memory.
