Lloyd Lap-Chi Ching

January 9, 1931 — February 21, 2021

Lloyd Lap-Chi Ching, 90, born on January 9, 1931, in Taishan, Guangzhou, China to Ching Jack-Hawk and Mark Min-Jen as the eldest of 9 children. He passed away on February 21, 2021 (day after his lunar calendar birthday) at a hospital in Monterey Park after a month long battle with Covid. He resided in Monterey Park, CA at the time of his passing.

Lloyd is survived by his three children, son, Fred Ching, daughters, Tamara Chan, Jeannie Van Buskirk and his seven sisters and brothers. He also has six grand-daughters, Samantha, Elizabeth, Sarah, Michelle, Rachael and Riley, ranging in age of 28 to 8.5 years old. Lloyd was predeceased by his beautiful wife Lena Yuen-Wah Ching and his second oldest brother Dick Cheng that lived in China.

Lloyd was a loving husband, a supportive dad, and a doting grandfather. Born in a poor, rural village in China, he never stopped pursuing his dream for a better life for himself, his siblings and his own family. Against the odds, he was able to graduate from the prestigious Sun Yat-Sen University majoring in Chinese Literature and because of this, he was able to garner a position at the publishing office of the Hydro-electric power of Beijing as an editor. It was soon apparent to our mom and dad that these were turbulent times in China, so they moved to Hong Kong with the assistance of my dad's uncle who had "adopted" him as a son. By this time, mom and dad had a 4 year old son, Fred. Again, their goal was to provide a better life for their children and they became a part of history. In 1962, more than 3000 families applied for the "Special Resettlement Program" offered by Canada and a mere 109 families in Hong Kong were ultimately selected.

As blessed as they were for the opportunity of being one of the chosen families to resettle, our parents willingly made the sacrifice to start anew in a foreign country, not knowing the language or anyone at all. A daughter, Tammy, was born 2 years after arriving in Canada. As a college graduate, Dad took any job available to not only support his growing family, but his 8 younger siblings as well, as our dad's own father had passed away and dad was the oldest son.

No job was too menial for dad who was supporting his family and his siblings back in China. Due to dad's adaptability, perseverance and exposure to the mechanical field while working for Beijing Hydro-electric, he was able to start as an apprentice in a molding company that supplied automotive components. Soon dad became a skilled mold polisher technician. A job that he would retire from at the age of 81!

With Fred ready to attend college, our parents again made a move to the United States as they were always thinking about their kids, in hopes of providing them with educational and future opportunities. With that life changing move to yet another country, another surprise blessing came a year later, the birth of the youngest daughter, Jeannie.

For the next 46 years, dad's continuous determination to elevate his whole, extensive family saw the arrival of 6 out of 7 siblings from China to the United States, and the joyous addition of six granddaughters, Samantha, Elizabeth, Sarah, Michelle, Rachael and Riley. His favorite saying to us and especially to the granddaughters was "Safety #1!" It's a truism and an endearing family mantra.

We will never forget one of dad's last words to us..."Please don't worry about me, I have lived a long and happy life...I will pass with no regrets. Take care of yourselves and your families." If we practice what he taught us through his actions, we have no course, but to take care of family. Dad, your task is done here. Rest in peace with mom. You are back together. We will take it from here. Dad's love and care will always be with us. Godspeed.

Funeral service will be held on Thursday, April 8, 2021. Service is outdoors at the Wee Kirk O'The Heather Church Courtyard at 2pm PST, followed by graveside/burial service at the Garden of Honor.

Our family have created a memorial page for our dad in addition to Forest Lawn's. If you would like to write a message, post a picture or video on either site, please feel free. The memorial website the family created is: https://lloydchingmemorial.blogspot.com/

Thank you everyone for all your kind words, thoughts and prayers. Dad will be missed and forever in our hearts.
