Linda G. Byer, 85, passed away on October 23, 2022, at her home in Palm Desert, California.
Linda was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and aunt. She is survived by four children and their spouses, Hal Byer (Mare), I. Andrew Byer (Debra), Steven Byer (Anne), and Lisa Byer Scheel (Norman); ten grandchildren and three spouses; and seven great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Robert Byer, of 60 years in April 2017.
Linda was born in Trenton, New Jersey on July 7, 1937, to Bob and Goldie Garb. After graduating from Trenton High School, Linda briefly attended The Ohio State University before meeting and marrying Bob in 1956 and moving to Clark, New Jersey. Linda was active in her synagogue, supported Bob as he built a business called Charles Chips, and raised four successful children. She moved to California with Bob in 1978 and never looked back, settling in Calabasas before relocating to Palm Desert in 1999.
Linda loved her family dearly. Affectionately called Mimi by her grandchildren, Linda would never let anybody go hungry. Her Thanksgivings were legendary. Individually wrapped loaves of six different breads, hundreds of meatballs (she knew precisely how many were in the serving container), trays of sweet potatoes, homemade ice cream pies, or hand-scooped ice cream ballsâyou name it. At Hanukkah, she would grate potatoes down to her knuckles, and she taught the next generations how to ensure they were just the perfect crispiness on the outside and fluffiness on the inside. Linda insisted on doing it all for as long as she could, and it was always a reminder just how important it was to her to share the time with her family. But you didn't have to be family to be invited to share a meal at Linda's house. She would invite strangers and friends of friends over for holiday meals, treating them as if she had known them for decades.
Linda loved to remind others to "do what you can, when you can, if you can." May we all take Linda's wise words to heart.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 30, 2022, at Forest Lawn Cathedral City.
