Liliane Joris Zandueta

December 23, 1951 — December 16, 2025

Liliane Maria Josepha Joris Zandueta, 73, of La Crescenta, CA, passed away on December 16, 2025.

Born on December 23, 1951, in Brasschaat, Belgium, she was the daughter of Franciscus Elisabeth Joris (1919-2004) and Irma Joanna Matthyssen Kart (1929-1959). Liliane was later adopted by loving stepmother Martha Maria Louisa Van den Eede (1919-2006). Liliane is preceded in death by her brother, Alfons Joris (1948-1977). She earned a master’s degree from University of Louven and eventually went on to work for the Canadian Consulate.

Liliane married Guillermo “Sonny” Zandueta in 1976 in Heidelberg, Germany. They shared many cherished memories throughout three decades of marriage, including living in Belgium the first year, then the Philippines for seven years before settling in the San Francisco Bay area in 1985, and in the Glendale-Los Angeles area from 1993 until their amicable separation in 2006. Together, they had three daughters, a devoted mother to Sascha Zandueta (Navik) Armen, Veronica Zandueta, and Cathy Zandueta (Jason Walker).

She took great joy in being a grandmother to her two grandchildren, Ariah Zandueta Armen (18) and Rennon Zandueta Armen (14), who brought immense happiness into her life.

Liliane was outgoing, fun-loving, and known for her kindness, warmth, and quick wit. A passionate tennis player, she embraced the sport with enthusiasm and enjoyed many matches with friends and family. As a talented artist, she expressed her creativity through painting in various styles, finding joy and fulfillment in her art. She loved to travel, exploring new places and cultures, and enjoyed strolling the streets of Honolulu St in Montrose-La Crescenta, relishing the beauty of her surroundings. Always ready for an outing, she embraced life with a spirit of adventure, often encouraging family and friends to join her on her walks and explorations.

Marking her 40th day death anniversary, the family will hold a funeral mass on Saturday, January 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Incarnation Catholic Church, 1001 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale, CA 91202. Immediately following the mass, there will be a procession beginning at Forest Lawn Cemetery (Gardens of Contemplation) at 1712 S Glendale Ave, Glendale, CA 91205, for burial. A luncheon will follow at Phoenicia Restaurant, 3725 N Central Ave, Glendale, CA 91203.

All are welcome to attend and celebrate her life.

In honor of her artistic legacy, some of her paintings will be displayed during the luncheon, allowing guests to walk around as if they are in a gallery, celebrating her creative spirit.

Liliane is survived by Sascha and Navik Armen, Ariah, Rennon; Veronica Zandueta; Cathy Zandueta, Jason Walker, and Madison Walker; along with her extended family, cherished friends, and all who loved and cared for her.

The family is deeply grateful for the outpouring of love, support, thoughts and prayers received throughout this difficult time. Special thanks to the compassionate care Liliane received and to friends and family who have kindly been a source of strength, comfort and solace.

Thank you to everyone at Incarnation Catholic Church, Forest Lawn Glendale, and Phoenicia Restaurant.

Prayers and Poems

*in Flemish & English

“Vier Engeltjes” gebed (“Four Angels” prayer):

Vier engeltjes rond mijn bed, één om te waken, één om te bidden, twee om mijn ziel weg te dragen.

(Four little angels around my bed, one to watch, one to pray, two to carry my soul away.)

Ave Maria (Hail Mary)

Wees gegroet Maria, vol van genade, de Heer is met u. (Hail Mary, full of grace, the Lord is with thee.)

Gij zijt gezegend boven alle vrouwen, en gezegend is de vrucht van uw schoot, Jezus. (Blessed art thou amongst women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.)

Heilige Maria, Moeder Gods, bid voor ons zondaars, (Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners,)

nu en in het uur van onze dood. Amen. (now and at the hour of our death. Amen.)

I'm Free

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.

I’m following the path God laid for me,

I took His hand when I heard Him call,

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day

To laugh, to love, to work, or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way,

I found that place at the close of day.

If my parting has left a void

Then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,

Ah yes, these things, I too, will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow.

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life’s been full, I savored much:

Good friends, good times, a loved one’s touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief.

Don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your heart and share with me.

God wanted me now, He set me free.

THE PROPHET: ON DEATH (excerpt)

For what is it to die but to stand naked in the wind and to melt into the sun?

And what is it to cease breathing but to free the breath from its restless tides,

that it may rise and expand and seek God unencumbered?

Only when you drink from the river of silence shall you indeed sing.

And when you have reached the mountain top, then you shall begin to climb.

And when the earth shall claim your limbs, then shall you truly dance.

Kahlil Gibran

I AM STANDING UPON THE SEASHORE (excerpt)

I am standing upon the seashore. A ship, at my side,

spreads her white sails to the moving breeze and starts

for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength.

I stand and watch her until, at length, she hangs like a speck

of white cloud just where the sea and sky come to mingle with each other.

Then, someone at my side says, ‘There, she is gone’

Gone where?

Gone from my sight. That is all. She is just as large in mast,

hull and spar as she was when she left my side.

And, she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port.

Her diminished size is in me—not in her.

And, just at the moment when someone says, ‘There, she is gone,’

there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices

ready to take up the glad shout, ‘Here she comes!’…

Henry Van Dyke
