Lawrence Francis Rampenthal passed away on Tuesday, May 12, 2020, at the age of 90. After an extended illness of Lewy Body dementia, "Larry" died at home in Rancho Mirage with his beloved wife, Vonda, of 50 years, and many of his children and grandchildren at his side.
Larry was born December 28, 1929 in LeRoy, Kansas to Alta Altha McClanahan and Francis Lawrence Rampenthal. Later he moved to Oxnard, California with his mother where he attended Oxnard Union High School. He spent 5 years in the US Navy (reserves) and married Wanda Lucille Wilcox in 1950. This union of 18 years produced five children, Deborah Ann, Susan Carole, Lawrence Francis Jr, JoAn Adell, and Catherine Leslie. All of whom were loved by him.
A man of commitment, he married Vonda Fayola Firestone in the 70's with whom he was married for 50 years. Larry helped to raise Vonda's two daughters, Karen Fay Mellon and Sherry Wysocki-Holt. He also loved his new family.
During the late 1950's Larry owned and operated two service stations, as they were called in those days. He sold gasoline and was an auto mechanic, able to fix automobiles and just about anything else. In time, he sold the service stations and worked for several Los Angeles based trucking companies (1960's-1990's). Eventually, he retired from ABF Freight System after a long and successful career. Not ready to fully retire, he found a job, teaching adults how to drive semi-trucks at a local training center, which he did for several yearsâVonda became one of his first students! He enjoyed this work immensely, seeing the benefit for those looking to better their life. He had an incredible work ethic which is emulated in his progeny. He was a man of great character, able to work with his hands and determined to make "something out of nothing."
Eventually, in the 2000's he and Vonda retired and split their time living winters in the California desert and summers in their home in the mountains of Idyllwild, California. They hosted many family gatherings at both homes and enjoyed the benefits of a large and loving family.
Lawrence F. "Larry" Rampenthal will be remembered for his infectious smile and warm personality. He had a quiet faith that drove his integrity, love, and kindness towards many. A friendly man, he had the gift of gab and could talk your leg off! His smile and friendly disposition let everyone know how special they were to him. He loved to tease, joke, and play and was always on the go. Swimming was a favorite past time, as a young man, and he made sure all of his children shared this love. He enjoyed horse racing, outings and eating out and had several favorite dining spotsâall offering a "good deal." His favorite place in the world was Hawaii, he loved experiencing it with family and did so several times. He and Vonda owned a home there for many years and even thought of relocating there. During his final months of life, he wanted to travel to Hawaii one last time, though this never was to be, the eternal beauty that surrounds him now, makes Hawaii pale in comparison.
He is survived by his wife, Vonda, seven children (5 biological and 2 by marriage), 19 grandchildren, 23 great-grandchildren and two half-sisters, Mary Ellen (Clifford) Hernandez and Elizabeth "Betty" (Clifford) Pedersen. He is preceded in death by his parents, one grandson, and one great-grandson. All loved him and will miss him dearly. Arrangements are under the direction of Forest Lawn, Cathedral City, CA.
