Our beloved Lawrence Kung passed away peacefully on July 22, 2026, surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old.
Larry was born on October 5, 1936, in Yangon, Myanmar. During the upheaval of war in the 1940s, his family fled by lorries through China, eventually finding refuge in Hong Kong. It was there that he built a remarkable life defined by resilience, athleticism, leadership, and devotion to family.
While studying at St. Joseph’s College in Hong Kong, Larry discovered a passion for soccer that would shape the course of his life. He played for the school team which sowed the seed for a distinguished athletic journey. After St Joseph’s, he started playing for various clubs and competed in the First Division, representing some notable clubs including Kitchee, South China, Happy Valley, and Jardine. His talents earned him selection to represent Hong Kong at the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Championship in both 1964 and 1968. In 1967, he received the honor of being named to the Asian All-Star team for a series of exhibition matches against English clubs Southampton and Leicester City.
Beyond the pitch, Larry pursued a career in law enforcement. He joined the police force in his early twenties and eventually rose to the rank of Deputy District Commander of Kowloon City. He also served as Captain of the Hong Kong Police Football Team, a role which earned him the lasting nickname "Cap" for his leadership ability.
In 1979, Larry moved his family to Los Angeles for the future of his children. He explored new careers, remained active in sports, and found great joy in spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren.
Larry is survived by his wife, Vera, and their children, Ken, Greg, Jeff, Ben, and Sam. He was also a proud grandfather to Kevin, Ashley, Derrick, Alison, Aidan, Sarah, and Spencer. His family was always the center of his life, and his unassuming and straight-shooting character will be deeply missed.
The funeral service will be held at Forest Lawn Covina Hills on August 22, 2026, at 12 noon. The family invites all who knew and loved Lawrence to join them in honoring a life fully and gracefully lived.
