Dr. Larry Q. Sutterby, age 71, of Glendale, California, passed away on July 19, 2022 surrounded by his loved ones.
Dr. Sutterby was born September 11, 1950, in Kansas City, Missouri to John and Wilma (Henry) Sutterby. He graduated from North Kansas City High School, in 1968 and was awarded a full scholarship to study chemistry at William Jewel College by the American Can Company Foundation. While completing his degree, he was awarded the Chemical Rubber Company Book Award (outstanding freshman in chemistry), the Susie Ray Robinson Poetry Award (authors of best original poems), and the David George Rowland Memorial Scholarship (promising junior chemistry major). He received his M.D. from the University of Missouri at Kansas City in 1976 and later met his future wife, Lucy, during his Internal Medicine Residency at Mt. Sinai Hospital, Chicago, Il (1976-1979). They were married at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church on July 5, 1980 in Wrightwood, California.
Dr. Sutterby was in private practice in Barstow, California from 1986-2000. He served as the President of the Medical Staff of Barstow Community Hospital, Medical Director of Rimrock Villa Convalescent Hospital, Medical Director of Hospice of the Visiting Nurses of the Inland Counties-Barstow Branch, Medical Director at Optioncare Home Health Services, Medical Director and Chairman of the Board of Hospice of Mojave Valley, and Recipient of the Loving Care Award of the Visiting Nurses Association of the Inland Counties 1988. He became American Board of Internal Medicine Certified in 1991 and Geriatric Medicine Certified in 1994. He became a Medical Consultant with the State of California Department of Health Services in 2001, before retiring in 2012.
Dr. Sutterby was a Roman Catholic, a Democrat, a collector of Lincoln cents, an amateur astronomer who planned vacations around the total solar eclipse, a talented writer, and a lover of music, film, and art. He was a fan of both Kansas City and Los Angeles sports teams.
Dr. Sutterby is survived by his wife of 42 years, Luciana (Magpuri); his children, Leah Lourdes and Liza Bernadette; and his brother & sister-in-law, Ray & Melba Sutterby. He was preceded in death by his parents, John & Wilma; his sister, Barbara; and his brothers Richard and Lloyd.
