Kyle Dennis Fargas.
On the morning of April 1, 2016, our beloved son, Kyle Dennis Fargas, passed away at City of Hope Medical Center in Duarte, California. He was just 19 years old and battled Leukemia (and the complications that resulted from it) for nearly 4 years. After receiving healthy stem cells from his father last year, we all felt this would be the cure we were hoping for. Unfortunately, his cancer came back in November and a new round of chemotherapy treatments was started. After finally getting him into remission when this brutal phase of medications was completed, things were looking up again. His doctors were able to transplant stem cells once more from his father and his white blood cell count started to slowly increase on Easter Sunday. However, the severe chemo side effects on the rest of Kyle's fragile body started to take their toll. From intestinal failure, septicemia, declining liver and significant breathing issues, his weakened immune system just couldn't compensate for such health challenges. With his parents' blessing, his doctors stopped his life support medications in the evening of March 31st. With loving friends and family surrounding him (and after 10 hours of fight left in him), Kyle became one of God's beautiful angels on April 1st at 8:57 a.m.
Kyle Dennis Fargas was born in Ansbach, Germany on April 26, 1996. He was the first and only child of Julia Potoret and Manuel Dennis Capulong Fargas.
Kyle came to America in 1998 at the age of 1. He grew up in Burbank and attended Burbank High School up until he got sick. He played basketball and water polo. He was able to continue his education and attempt to finish high school despite his condition at Rancho Del Mar High School in Palos Verdes where he participated in their home study program. He had one thing in common with his favorite teacher Mrs. Driver, and that is the love for history. He was a straight A student and shared his love for historical facts with everyone he knew. He was a brilliant young man, and his teachers praised him consistently. He had high hopes of attending a university, and was officially accepted to California State University, Northridge to start in the fall of 2015. Unfortunately, his illness delayed his start date.
He was so intelligent that he worked side by side with his doctors on his cure. He researched every single medication and treatment plan, as well as other alternatives. He was a very independent thinker. His aunt Candy and uncle Earl always said, the only thing missing was the hospital granting him an honorary PhD.
Kyle was a fanatic of the Los Angeles Lakers. In fact, his Auntie Candy would tease him that he could be a Laker lawyer because, in his eyes, the Lakers could do no wrong. He was the biggest Kobe Bryant fan. He even asked to meet him in person for his "make a wish" request from Children's hospital.
He truly loved hanging out with his mom, they watched YouTube videos for hours together, attended the yearly LA car show religiously every year, watched movies, and mom took Kyle to his first ever concert of Coldplay in Phoenix, AZ. They loved and looked and forward to watching weekly TV shows like walking dead and house of cards.
Kyle became closer to his European roots by making many trips to Germany to visit his Grandmother and Grandfather. He spent a lot of quality time with the Potoret family including feeding the ducks, fishing and riding bikes with Grandpa. He loved auntie Cris' famous Hungarian goulash dish. Distance didn't get in the way of knowing the Potoret family. Kyle embraced the German culture, the culture that his mother grew up in when her family migrated to Germany at an early age. In fact, Kyle tried to learn to speak the German language which he loved.
Kyle was an avid fan of Mixed Martial Arts and loved Bruce Lee. He taught Filipino Escrima by his father's side even despite his illness. Kyle did not want to be known as sickly instead he wanted people to treat him just like everyone else. Kyle was adventurous, competitive, loved playing video games and loved watching action movies with his Dad. His Dad and him were always at the movies every single weekend. His favorite movie was The Godfather. Kyle watched that gangster trilogy that his aunt bought him over 100 times. He memorized and would recite each and every line. He loved watching the history channel. In fact, He made his aunt Candy read all the monument descriptions with him in the freezing cold during their trip to Washington D.C.
Kyle loved food, he always wanted to try new dishes and him and his mom did just that. His musical tastes transitioned from rock to hip hop when he became a teenager, and especially loved Tupac Shakur's rap music. He had many caring friends, but Kyle worried and cared as much or more about the people around him.
Kyle you are truly missed by all, and we are so blessed to hold you close to our hearts. We have been overwhelmed with happiness to have spent 20 years in your presence. You are an angel from up above and only God could have made such a creation like you, a handsome, brilliant, loving and caring person. Every breath we took was always for your sake but now you sleep inside our dreams. Goodnight our sweet prince. Remember that you are life's one miracle. We will meet again in God's time.
