Kenneth Leroy Johnson, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, neighbor, and friend, died on Oct. 21, 2021, in West Covina, California, his home of 56 years. He was 84.
Born on Dec. 1, 1936, in Los Angeles, California, he was the youngest child of Leroy and Marguerite Johnson. He grew up with his sisters, Yvonne and Valeria, his brother, Maurice, and his niece, DeVaul. Ken graduated from Los Angles Polytechnic High School in 1954, where he was on the football and swim teams, and attended Los Angeles City College, where he also played football. After serving in the U.S. Army, Ken began working as a draftsman for the State of California Division of Highways. He was a California state employee for over 39 years, retiring from Caltrans as an Associate Building Estimator.
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Mary, his daughter and son-in-law, Chelle and Dave Miller, his son, Ken Johnson, his grandsons, Joseph Miller and James Massey-Johnson, and his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Clay and Basilia Bomar, Ginny and Carl Farris, Tony and Lucille Bomar, and Carole Jones.
In retirement, Ken and Mary traveled extensively and joined the Van Nuys Traveliers RV Club where Ken enjoyed the social and service events. Joseph and James fondly recall camping with their grandparents.
Ken's life was his testimony. He was a family man with a generous spirit. Ken always was willing to extend a hand to anyone working hard to finish school, find a job, rent an apartment, or buy a house. Ken and Mary joined the First Baptist Church of West Covina in 1973. Ken served as a deacon and a youth leader, often driving Chelle, Dave, Ken, and the other youth to Thousand Pines Christian Camp, as well as various regional youth conferences. Ken was later an active member of Christ First Covina, where he joined a small group and faithfully attended virtual services during COVID-19.
Ken's family thanks you for your support, condolences, and gifts during this very difficult time. We sincerely appreciate Pastor Marco Ramirez for ministering to Ken at the end of his life, and Pastor Doug Meye for officiating at Ken's service.
