Dr. Kenneth Kiyol Chang, a beloved figure in the Los Angeles community and a trailblazer for Korean American dentists, passed away peacefully on February 5, 2025, at the age of 88. Born on October 24, 1936, in Yongchon, Pyeonganbuk-do, North Korea, Dr. Chang's life was characterized by remarkable achievements, unwavering dedication, and a profound commitment to his family, church and community.
Dr. Chang practiced general dentistry in Los Angeles for an impressive 45 years, retiring at the age of 83. As a first-generation Korean American dentist, he not only paved the way for future generations but also served as the first Korean American dental licensing examiner for the Dental Board of California. His commitment to the profession and the community was evident in his numerous leadership roles, including serving as President of the Korean Dental Association from 1973 to 1975, President of the Korean Chamber of Commerce of Southern California between 1979 to 1981, and holding positions on the Boards of several notable organizations, including the Korea Town Development Corporation of Los Angeles and the Seoul Olympic Support Committee .
In addition to his professional achievements, Dr. Chang played a pivotal role in the development of Koreatown during the 1970s and 1980s. His vision and leadership significantly contributed to the thriving community that exists today, and he was honored with the Medal of Merit (Chul Top) from the Government of South Korea in 1981 for his efforts.
Dr. Chang's commitment to serving others extended beyond his professional life. He served in the Korean Army Dental Corps, where he provided care for Korean and American soldiers, and was honorably discharged in 1963 with the rank of Captain. His experiences shaped his outlook on life, fostering within him a spirit of optimism and determination that he carried into his personal life.
His family fondly remembers him as a father who sacrificed to provide his children with the finest educational opportunities. Starting off family life with modest means did not stop Dad from taking his family on memorable R.V. trips throughout the west and from encouraging his children to pursue any sport or activity they were interested in. An avid golfer, Dr. Chang continued to play well into his 80s, and especially enjoyed playing with his core group of golfing friends .
Dr. Chang is survived by his loving wife, Sue; his sister, Helen; his children, Andrew, Lisa, and Michael; and his cherished grandchildren: Max, Brenna, Macy, Viveka, Nina, Kiyol, Kristen, Ken, and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his mother, Sonia S. Suk, and his father Gun-doo Chang.
