Julia was a long time resident of the Silverlake area of Los Angeles, California, where she lived with her family for over 47 years. She immigrated from Guatemala to Los Angeles, California in 1967. When she first arrived in Los Angeles, Julia landed a job as a housekeeper and then a job at Queen of Angels Hospital in 1970. The hospital closed in the early 1990's and merged with Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, thus becoming Queen of Angels/Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital. Later in the years, the hospital became CHA Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center. Julia worked a grand total of 51 years at the hospital. Her sons would often ask Julia why she doesn't retire and Julia's reply was that her coworkers were her second family. Julia worked the Labor and Delivery Unit and was affectionately known by her coworkers as "Mama Esther" because of her kind, loving, caring demeanor. She was also referred to as "Mama Julia" by friends. "Mama Esther" would never hesitate in assisting her coworkers when the floor got busy and would always keep her coworkers loose and relaxed, oftentimes making jokes to keep everyone at ease.
Julia was the same at home as she was at work, kind, loving, caring. She loved to cook and boy could she cook. The family would regularly have get-togethers at Julia's house and she would always cook up a big feast! Her four sons have many close friends that would partake in the get togethers and the home cooked meals, they all loved her cooking and would often ask, "when is the next family get-together?!"
As stated above, Julia loved cooking, loved playing her casino games at home, loved going to the many Indian Casinos, loved listening to her "Marimba" music, loved playing dominoes and cards, loved her pet dogs (both named "Tiny"), the cat "Snickers" and her beloved Dodgers. Her love for the Dodgers was so great that she got Spectrum cable in order to watch their games. Julia loved being around family, always telling jokes to make people laugh. She devoted much of her time and energy to family. She was the sweetest, kindest person anyone would ever want to meet. She will be greatly missed by everyone.
