Julia Cockroft was born on December 4, 1948, in Calvert, Texas. She was the seventh child of eleven born to Manuel and Julia Velasquez. In the fall of 2019, she was diagnosed with lung cancer and in remission until the Spring of 2023 when the cancer progressed to stage IV. She fought so bravely and courageously until her last breath. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away peacefully at her home on November 16, 2025, at the age of seventy-six. Her life was marked by her unwavering faith and service to God, deep love for her family, and a quiet grace that touched everyone who knew her. She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She blessed her family and countless others as a homemaker, talented seamstress, great cook and prayer warrior.
Julia is survived by her devoted husband, Jarold Cockroft; her children, April Montini and husband Anthony Montini and Anna Moon; grandchildren, Caden, Caleigh, and Carson Montini, and Ian Moon. She is also survived by her sisters, Vicki Griffin, Nellie Sparkman and husband Bill Sparkman, Francis Castillo and husband Dante Castillo, Mary Boggan, and Josephine Florida and husband John Florida, along with numerous nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Manuel and Julia Velasquez; first husband, John Woodall, Jr.; son-in-law, Jeremy Moon; siblings, Raymond, John, Wiley and Louisa Velasquez and Beatrice Lasater; brothers-in-law, Frank Lasater and Bobby Boggan; sister-in-law, Marilyn Velasquez.
Julia’s beauty, gentle spirit, compassion, unwavering faith, and dedication is the legacy left to her family, who take comfort knowing she is now in Heaven, embraced by God and reunited with loved ones.
