Jose Antonio Lemus, Jr.

April 23, 1988 — April 24, 2025

Jose Antonio Lemus, Jr., passed away at age 37 on April 24, 2025. He was born on April 23, 1988, at Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in Compton, California. He resided in Lafayette, Louisiana at the time of his passing.

Our beautiful brother had many nicknames including Toñito, Tony, Baloney, and Damion. He was a courageous, gentle, and loving individual who touched our lives in countless ways. Everyone who met Jose experienced his kindness, thoughtfulness, humor, and sensitive nature.

Jose spent his childhood in Bell, California before relocating to Fontana, California in 1999. He attended Woodland Elementary, Truman Middle School, and graduated with a GED from Fontana High School in 2006.

Jose’s lifelong passion for animals led him to become a proud certified pet groomer, a role in which he was genuinely happy. As a kid he had chickens and roosters. As an adult his pets were fish, a snake, a turtle, and a tarantula. Jose volunteered for the local animal hospital, he worked for the Fontana Pet Store, CVS, and later at PetSmart in Upland, California.

In January of 2020, Jose traveled across the country and moved to Lafayette, Louisiana to be with his friends Cameron and Charlie. He continued his pet grooming career and remained in Lafayette for the last 5 years of his life.

On Thursday morning, April 24, 2025, Jose died by suicide.

Jose asks everyone for forgiveness:

"I know that there will be confusion, anger, blame. Please, put that blame on me, direct your anger towards me. I know that my decision will affect others for much longer than it will affect me... and for that I can only beg for your forgiveness."

Jose wants us to know he loved us.

"Please tell my family I loved them. My parents, Bere, Yesi, Mark. I love them so much. My nieces and nephews, my uncles, aunts and cousins... I'm so sorry I'm doing this to all of you. I love you all so much."

"May you all find what you are looking for, and may it be worth it all. Know that my last thoughts were of you, my family, my friends. Of all the good memories, the kind memories. I'm so sorry, I'm so sorry. I love you."

We will remember Jose for his gentle heart and genuine nature. We will miss his strength, humor, dance abilities, shiny dark hair, and the love he had for us.

We forgive you son, little brother, big brother, uncle, brother-in-law, nephew, godson, cousin, and friend. We will love you for eternity.

Jose, may you find your heaven filled with loquat trees, animals to take care of, magic, peace, good music, and a sense of belonging.

Jose is survived by his parents Toño and Rosa, his siblings Mark, Yesica, and Berenise; his nieces and nephews, Dulce, Emily, Mia, Penelope, Benjamin, and Emilio. His brothers- in- law, Edgar and Fred.

A mis padres, Bere, Yesi, Mark. Los quiero muchísimo. A mis sobrinos, mis tíos, tías y primos...
